Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke on Tuesday mused about the difficulties of building President Trump's signature border wall on the Mexican border, asserting that America can't give away the Rio Grande to Mexico in the process.
"The border is complicated, as far as building a physical wall," he said during a speech to the Public Land Council in Washington D.C., according to E&E News.
"The Rio Grande, what side of the river are you going to put the wall? We're not going to put it on our side and cede the river to Mexico. And we're probably not going to put it in the middle of the river."
The report also said Zinke admitted that the administration could instead rely on electronic defenses or could skip building the wall in certain areas where terrain may make crossing improbable.
Thanks to a 1970 treaty negotiated between the United States and Mexico, the middle of the Rio Grande serves as the boundary between the two countries in some places. That treaty, as well as the natural shifts of the river, served as a stumbling block to previous attempts to build border fencing and could complicate the Trump administration's push for a wall.
Trump made the construction of a border wall to stem the flow of illegal immigration a centerpiece of his presidential campaign. Once in the Oval Office, Trump almost immediately signed an executive order calling for the wall to be built and the Department of Homeland Security has requested proposals for the wall.

Build the wall where you can.
Pikes on the North shore of the river will do just fine.
Build the wall.
All of the wall.
Now.
The border fence doesn’t have to be on the actual border. In fact, it is better if it is a little bit on our side so that Mexico has no say about it, we have full access for repairs and that anyone touching is already in the US illegally and can be dealt with.
How about we just eminent domain some land on the south side of the Rio Grande? Works for me. Man, can you hear la raza squeeling about that?
The people of the USA want that wall so build and quit making excuses. Trump needs to fire him.
The Rio Grande is ditch with fetid dirty water in it. Barely a creek in most places.
Once they set foot on our land they can ask for asylum and/or are put into our system.
The Rio Grande is ours, bought and paid for with the lives of American soldiers. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the Mexican-American War, 1848, gave the United States ownership of the Rio Grande as a boundary for Texas, and also, ownership of California and a large area comprising roughly half of New Mexico, most of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is correct. We’re not going to give ownership of the Rio Grande to Mexico. It’s ours and we’re keeping it.

Send that suggestion to President Trump and Secy Zinke!
Native to the mountains of North Carolina, I don’t understand the importance of the Rio Grande other than its being a major pipeline for foreign illegals and heroin, both of which are killing people here. I voted for the wall ... BUILD THE WALL.
I agree absolutely, well-said.
So you agree with that idiot? Really? So how does building a wall give up ownership of that drainage ditch?
The Wall will never be built, put the Hopium Pipe down and get over it.
If you think for one second we are going to end the war on drugs by putting up a wall and winning, you are just plain stupid. 2 out o3 Government Jobs across this country depend on the War on Drugs for their Jobs and Lively hood. Police, Fire, Judges, Lawyers, Prisons, guards, Probation, Parole,... the list is endless.
Also, if you think for one second we are going to just dismantle the Police State we have spent 45 years creating, you too are just plain stupid.
We need the War on Drugs more than anything you could ever imagine, and there is NO WAY IN HELL we will put up a Wall and WIN!!!
Whether the Spanish claimed it legally or illegally in the 1500’s, Mexico threw them out in 1821. Then sold it to us in 1848. Mexico if it had a legitimate claim to California only possessed it 27 years.
Many of the Mexicans in Texas and California territory had reached out to the U.S. for protection from their own government from Indians and other ruthless Mexicans.
Was it there's to sell? Did they obtain it legally ? Didn't the Mexican citizens that lived in those territories ask for protection?
The versions of facts on this subject vary in different books and even here on FR. Does anyone know what was Fake News surrounding the Treaty of Hildago or truth on who stole what ?
I disagree.
Build the wall. Every foot of it.
Electrified mesh
Don’t get me wrong, I want the wall built, I spent $10K and 1 1/2 years to get my Wife a green card legally. BUT, It will NEVER BE BUILT.
Who is going to be the to FIRE 2 out of 3 Government Employee’s across this country if we win the War on Drugs by building a Wall?? We are talking 22 Million nationwide, about 12-14 Million will become unemployed and unemployable.
What a defeatist attitude. If the war on drugs is really a way to fill our privatized prisons, then we need to let a few prisons go bk. And I doubt 2 of 3 jobs in govt depend of the phony war on drugs. If it’s true then the wall serves several purposes.
