Somethings Wrong
March 18, 2017
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18
The morning after our son, Allen, was born, the doctor sat down in a chair near the foot of my bed and said, Somethings wrong. Our son, so perfect on the outside, had a life-threatening birth defect and needed to be flown to a hospital 700 miles away for immediate surgery.
When the doctor tells you something is wrong with your child, your life changes. Fear of what lies ahead can crush your spirit and you stumble along, desperate for a God who will strengthen you so you can support your child.
Would a loving God allow this? you wonder. Does He care about my child? Is He there? These and other thoughts shook my faith that morning.
Then my husband, Hiram, arrived and heard the news. After the doctor left, Hiram said, Jolene, lets pray. I nodded and he took my hand. Thank You, Father, for giving Allen to us. Hes Yours, God, not ours. You loved him before we knew him, and he belongs to You. Be with him when we cant. Amen.
Hiram has always been a man of few words. He struggles to speak his thoughts and often doesnt try, knowing that I have enough words to fill any silence. But on a day when my heart was broken, my spirit crushed, and my faith gone, God gave Hiram strength to speak the words I couldnt say. And clinging to my husbands hand, in deep silence and through many tears, I sensed that God was very near.
The best kind of friend is a praying friend.
First Samuel 21:1015 records the story of David pretending madness to the Philistines in order to escape the pursuit of King Saul, and it was this event to which David addressed Psalm 34. His joyful gratefulness for divine protection can be seen in verses 46, and he recommends that the reader also taste and see that the Lord is good (v. 8). A wonderful verse of ongoing thanksgiving and worship is verse 5: Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. The Wycliffe Bible Commentary tells us that this psalm is not only for ourselves but for the next generation: Those addressed as children are again the humble and teachable disciples of any age (vv. 1122). God works in our lives at the most difficult times and His gracious lessons are worth passing on to others.

The shamrocks would be brown if they grow here but at least they are not under snow. I always thought green beer tasted funny but in days it will be Spring and things will turn green. The day I notice large patches of green is my favorite day of the year.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
The Gershwin family was Jewish at a time when it wasnt safe to be a Jew in Russia. Georges father Moishe, who worked leather for womens shoes, met and fell in love with Roza Bruskina, the teenage daughter of a furrier in Vilnius. The Bruskina clan emigrated to New York thanks to pogroms executed by Cossacks tacitly supported by the tsars government. Moishe, who was about to be drafted into the Imperial Russian Army, also came to America. Once in New York, Moishe Gershowitz became Morris Gershwine, took a job as a foreman in a shoe factory and married Roza, who became Rose. In those days you changed your name to fit in!
Ira was born in 1896 and Jacob in 1898. When Jacob became a success in the music business, he changed his name to George Gershwin, and everyone in the family adopted the new surname. Everybody loves to be connected to a winner!
George had the usual life of a child in New Yorks tenements running around with friends and getting into trouble. He cared nothing for music until age ten when he was intrigued by what he heard at a friends violin recital. His parents had bought a piano for Ira, but to their surprise and Iras relief, it was George who played it.
George spent the next two years looking for a piano teacher who could match his prodigious gifts before finally being introduced to Charles Hambitzer. Until his death in 1918, Hambitzer remained Gershwins musical mentor and taught him conventional piano technique, introduced him to the music of the European classical tradition and encouraged him to attend concerts. At home, George would try to play the music that hed heard at the concert from memory and without sheet music.
LEN CARIOU: WHEN YOU WANT EM, YOU CANT GET EM, WHEN YOUVE GOT EM, YOU DONT WANT EMIn 1913 at age 15, George dropped out of school and found his first job at Remick, a Detroit publishing firm with a branch in New Yorks Tin Pan Alley, where he earned $15 a week. Published in 1916, this was his first song, and it earned him the princely sum of 50 cents.
The 1989 musical Ziegfeld was a pastiche of tunes from various composers intended to recreate a Ziegfeld Follies show. The lyrics were written by Murray Roth, another anonymous scribbler at Remick.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
GEORGE GERSHWIN: WHEN YOU WANT EM, YOU CANT GET EM, WHEN YOUVE GOT EM, YOU DONT WANT EMGeorge had a habit of dropping in at the Cotton Club in Harlem during the day, which gave him the chance to familiarize himself with current styles and musicians. One day he was engaged in a backstage cutting contest playing jig piano when Eubie Blake heard him. Blake was to contribute his own tunes to the Great American Songbook in later years, and hearing George at the keyboard, he said, He plays pretty good for a white boy.
In the days when recording was in its infancy, player pianos were all the rage, and there was a huge market in piano rolls that could give a listener the pleasure of hearing a great pianist in his own parlor. This was how people were first introduced to his music, with no less than George himself at the keyboard.. Ragtime was in full flower, and his piano style owes a lot to Scott Joplin.
