Hey Liberals: Stop Saying That Trump's Budget Will Kill Meals On Wheels
Forbes ^ | 03/17/2017 | Erik Sherman

There is much about the Trump administration's actions and decisions that could reasonably concern one. The latest block of information to digest has been the budget blueprint, which is an unrealistic fiction of what the country needs and where to most effectively spend money.

Criticism is fine and necessary. However, there is a tendency for people who oppose Trump, and, sadly, for journalists covering the administration, to jump into every utterance and decision with, as a public policy Spinal Tap think tank would say, the dial turned up to 11. A clear example is the claim in some media outlets that the proposed budget would kill Meals on Wheels.

The relevant Department of Housing and Urban Development section of the budget contains the following language:

"Eliminates funding for the Community Development Block Grant program, a savings of $3 billion from the 2017 annualized CR level. The Federal Government has spent over $150 billion on this block grant since its inception in 1974, but the program is not well-targeted to the poorest populations and has not demonstrated results. The Budget devolves community and economic development activities to the State and local level, and redirects Federal resources to other activities."

Meals on Wheels, a program that supports the delivery of meals to seniors who cannot afford food or cannot prepare it, started in Australia and has been in the United States since 1954. The program serves 2.4 million seniors every year and does get funding from the Community Development Block Grant program.

But the situation is complicated and saying that the budget eliminates the Meals on Wheels program is factually incorrect. According to the Meals on Wheels annual IRS filing for 2015 (it isn't a government program), approximately 3.3 percent of its funding comes from government sources.

I just don’t want to hear this stuff anymore. Even in my little county of 30K you can call the local minibus wagon to put your ass wherever you want and pick you up - even to the local senior center to grab some free food. Just don’t want to hear it any more.

It’s up to the States to take this money and spend it how they see fit, it’s not up to the Federal Government to make sure that the States do this...

Same thing with the ‘after school programs’ there is a block that is sent to the States from the Federal Government and if the States don’t do this program, that doesn’t lay at the feet of the Federal Government...

Federal Government in this case: You and everyone’s tax dollars...

I get Meals On Wheels, and have for a few years now.

I am mostly housebound, with attendant home health crews, in between bouts of V.A. stays.

I write my check, to cover the costs related to me of a dollar something a meal/ for five days a week.

The check goes to the County Council on Aging.

I support Mr. Trump.
I voted for Mr.
Trump.

I have an accounting background, and understand the quote:
“There is no result.”

Nonprofit organizations were designed to always stay in the red, even if they nudge over to the black! Therefore, no profit, no result. What gains there are, quickly get disbursed before report time
How?
I suggest the overseers cull the profit.
This IS Louisiana, donchakno!

Meals on wheels should be a local thing since it’s the locals cooking and delivering.

MOW is 100% local and private. Some facilities receive small amounts of state funding. The vast majority of MOW funding is raised in the private sector. It has nothing to do with the Federal budget.

My Late Aunt used to get Meals in Wheels.

She wrote then a Donation Check every Month.

It wasn’t mandatory, but she gave what she could.

All this charity crap that the feds do should all be done at the local or state level in my opinion. Let the states keep more of their money then filter that down to the counties. More accountability and the programs would be run better. Get the feds out of charity period.

Yes. Because if the government doesn’t do it the neighbors and charities will just let grandma starve to death.

MY SJW niece posted this “Trump wants to end MOW” nonsense on her FB page. I responded with the fact that only about 3% of the funding comes from the Feds and that amount could be made up with donations. Then I challenged libs to put their money where their mouths are. She asked why I was making it a liberal/conservative thing, and I responded that it was the libs pushing the lie that Trump was trying to end MOW. I also noted that it was a documented fact that libs donate far less money to charitable causes that actually HELP people than do conservatives.
