The Obamacare replacement bill could die on Thursday

The much-maligned Obamacare replacement bill will face its biggest test so far on Thursday, as a House of Representatives committee filled with conservatives could derail the legislation backed by Speaker Paul Ryan before it gets to the House floor.

If four Republicans join Democrats in voting against the bill in the House Budget Committee, the legislation will fail.

The uncertainty comes as the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its estimate on the bill. It predicted Monday that 24 million people would lose health coverage by 2026 but that there would be a cut to the federal budget deficit of $337 billion over the first decade.

At least seven Republican members of the Budget Committee have made public statements in the past week indicating they want a full repeal of Obamacare, but it’s unclear whether four of them will decide to go out on a limb and vote no.

One of them, Mark Sanford of South Carolina, joined Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul at a news conference last week to slam the legislation as a dereliction of the Republican Party’s campaign promises.

Agree with everything you said - the only difference today is we have a President who is not shy about prying government off the People's back.

Trump has a steep uphill battle but I doubt he will settle long term even if forced to compromise short term.

As you noted, God may show His hand in it, else, we will be getting 90% of what Trump wants to make happen.

All you need to do is take a brief glance at my 1 page profile, and it will become clear, this Paul Ryan bill is not what I wish to see. But my other half of brain, infused with reality recognizes that with 52 flexible senators, a veto proof bill is not the reality. At least it is a start by removing the mandate and the subsidies and the medical equipment taxes. It can be passed by reconciliation, thus not needing a single Rat vote.

Then cometh the 2018 congressional elections. That will decide how far the healthcare system goes free market with full bore competition. In the meanwhile, I am for repeal Obamacare and replace it with something which is pointing in the right direction.

Phase 3 will happen only if voters in 2018 decide they want it.

Wrong. Trump isn’t like these idiots who don’t ACTUALLY want to get anything done. I bet you he would push them to put everything one by one (bill for reducing drugs, bill for cross boarder, bill for hsa’s) and force people to vote up or down. This other stuff would fail in an up or down vote which is what it’s actually not a bad idea to ram them through reconciliation. Another way to do this is to get VP Pence to over rule BS Senate reconciliation rules. Trump is brave and isn’t afraid of putting him name on things. Don’t worry

Did I say anything bad about Trump? That dude is fearless, will fight waste and overpricing better than any career politician. But reality is Trump can not pass laws by himself. So we have to depend on the career politicians in congress to cooperate. I will go along with anything which achieves objective #1.....repeal Obamacare.

Sensible reply.

Caution, don't give these government-loving politicians on the Right or the Left, room to entrench themselves short of full repeal.

The replacement should be, sooner than later, the market economy free of government interference as our healthcare was before the 70's when it was the envy of the world.

You love in reality because you are part of what many of us understand but so many others will not admit.
