'Nobody really cares': In this Ohio town, Trump and Russia aren't really on the radar
Washington Post (via Chicago Tribune) ^ | 078 Mar 17

Thousands of miles from here, the Kremlin is denying accusations that it meddled in the U.S. presidential election. But in this town of rolling farmland and main streets shaded by grain elevators, the barrage of news coming out about the Trump's administrations ties to Russia has fallen on mostly indifferent ears.

"The Russia thing doesn't fit too well here," said Harold Rowland in between bites of his breakfast at McDonald's. "Nobody really cares."

Rowland, 75, comes almost every morning to this McDonald's on the outskirts of town to sit and talk with three other Wilmington residents who have formed an informal breakfast club.

They've only discussed Russia once in recent weeks - when former national security adviser Mike Flynn resigned over revelations about his potentially illegal contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"He was out of bounds for sure," said Rowland, who last voted for a Democrat in 1962.

Wayne Smith, 74, said he's skeptical about all the stories about alleged ties between Trump associates and Russia.

"Is there something there? Probably," said Smith, who walks with a cane and stands up about every 10 minutes to relieve the pressure on his back, a lingering reminder of his half century working as a barber before he retired. "But Judas Priest, don't go overboard."

Smith said he thinks the media and Democrats have "made a mountain out of a mole hill" and killed off any chance for a rational discussion. When he watched Trump's joint address to Congress last week, he felt buoyed by it.

...

Still, the four men at the table said they are pleased with how Trump is running the country and remain optimistic, no matter the news coming out of Washington.

Uh oh... Not good. The coastal media elite in cities that voted 80+% for Hillary Clinton are discovering that people in Trump Country just don't really care about Russia now matter how much they push it to the top..

Those damn rural bumpkins! Don't they know we're supposed to tell them how to think?

The Post then goes on to find six people in a book club, the only liberals in town, and spends the second half of the article giving them a forum to rant.

Not totally off the flyover-country radar... a lot of us are adding bytes to our e-mails by attaching pictures of dogs blaming the Russians for canine incontinence.

It must be shocking to the media that not everyone cares about their hysterical, incessant coverage of this nothing-burger.

Rooted Ohioans think for themselves. We also recognize stupidity, when and where it crops up in our faces.

The Washington Post & the New York Times have taken stupidity in journalism to a new level.

Fake news media hasn’t convinced the country Trump is an illegitimately elected Russian puppet.

Russian election hacking angle hasn’t changed people’s opinions about the President.

Fake news media is the big loser.

Most people I know think the idea that Russia helped Trump is a joke. A pathetic joke.

Maria Bartiromo had a CA democrat on this morning and he tried to claim that Russia interfered in our election and she just lit into him. That woman is awesome. Don't go on her show and throw out unproven attacks on DJT. She won't stand for it. She'll take all the legitimate criticism her guests can state but once they start attacking she fights back!

Van Jones doesn't have too many fans here on FreeRepublic, but to his credit I think he has really gotten his finger on the pulse of "flyover country" since his epic election night rant on CNN.

It’s evident after reading the foulmouthed responses of the aggrieved Hillary voters online that they loathe people in the South, our nation’s rural areas, and small towns. Obviously, they’ve forgotten who provides their food and fuel in this country, but possibly some day they will find out.

Just today I was pondering: The only place I’ve heard or seen anything on this ‘day without women’ is on the internet. I’m sure it will make a splash on the left and right coasts, but here in flyover country, nobody cares.

We don’t care about fake Russia claims, we don’t care about their nightly over the top criticism or President Trump, we don’t care about much - other than to be left alone and let our economy become unchained.

Mostly white and with a population of roughly 12,000 people, Wilmington's surrounding county of Clinton has gone Republican in every presidential race since 1962, when Lyndon B. Johnson was elected.

If something as simple as this is wrong, what else is wrong ?

Wilmington, in Clinton county, southeast of Dayton, or northeast of Cincy, on Rt. 22.

Where the “main streets” are not “shaded by grain elevators”.

We have a bad habit of describing people who we ideologically disagree with as “idiots”. Van Jones is an ideologe but he’s not stupid, and the cognitive dissonance sometimes overrides his bias. Too many of these insiders (R and D) live in an echo chamber but get them out of it even for a little while, and they start to open their eyes.

A day without women?

My wife and I live on a farm a few miles outside a very small town.

This morning, my wife and I put out new hay to feed our herd of cows and their new calves. Then she rototillered the garden for spring planting, while I ran some errands in town to the hardware store, the feed store and the gas station. Women were working, as were men, at all my stops. I didn't see any marches or protests. Not one.

Unless I had read about this on the internet, neither my wife or I, would have known anything about it. My wife complained, tongue-planted-firmy-in-her-cheek, that she didn't get the memo.

I guess the national day without women didn't go over real big around here....

The main concern in Wilmington, Ohio is where to find work. DHL pulled out of the old air base in 2010 and threw 11,000 + people out of work. Some new jobs have been created at the base, but the latest bad news was that Amazon picked Covington, Ky over Wilmington for their new transit hub. The area is hurting.
