The German government told Washington it had the wrong address, after the US administration tried to enter talks with Germany on trade.
Trade policy is the responsibility of the European Union, a spokesperson for the Economy Ministry told its US counterparts when they tried to open discussion on trade, Spiegel reported on Tuesday.
Peter Navarro, who heads the White Houses new National Trade Council, called for bilateral talks to reduce the US trade deficit with Germany on Monday.
The US recorded a $502-billion trade deficit last year, meaning it imported more than it exported. Germany, meanwhile, exported 253 billion ($270 billion) more than it imported in 2016.
Germany is one of the most difficult trade deficits that we are going to have to deal with, the Financial Times reported Mr. Navarro saying. We are thinking long and hard about that and I know that Angela Merkel is coming here soon and perhaps well be having some discussions about how we can improve the US-German economic relationship.

Looks like we’re gonna need more popcorn. :-D
Easy Mistake to make I guess. Since as Germany controls (or think it does) the E.U.
This is evidence of its control, in fact. If it were a country that were being smothered by the EU, it would jump at the chance for bilateral talks.
The krauts don’t want to trade? Fine.
Talk to the EU? You mean that collection of unelected bureaucrats from Luxembourg and Belgium that tell Germans where to invest their money?
pfft.
Talk to the hand.
Looks like we need less “made in Germany” stuff
Time for more “Made In The USA”.
I think they need to defend themselves considering they are working against their own security. Anybody think these countries will be effective in a war?
They will come around. Look at Britain. Its trade has increased dramatically since Brexit.
Trump should tell the German government that he’ll wait and then talk to the new German government.
That’s not going to help Merkel
The Jerries will rethink that position.
That's the one.
If they can find any political types there that don’t think of Germany and the EU as “one”, then things could proceed better. FWICS though, not even the “skeptics” want to abandon the EU and especially not abandon the social market economy.
spot on!
Time to buy short on Seimens stock?
Looks like we need less made in Germany stuff
Screw Merkel. Screw the krauts. Screw the EU.
Let them stew in their own juices.
This will be Germany’s loss
Okay. Forget it then. We tried.
