The Trump administration is seeking to slash the budget of one of the governments premier climate science agencies by 17 percent, delivering steep cuts to research funding and satellite programs, according to a four-page budget memo obtained by The Washington Post.
The proposed cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would also eliminate funding for a variety of smaller programs, including external research, coastal management, estuary reserves and coastal resilience, which seeks to bolster the ability of coastal areas to withstand major storms and rising seas.
NOAA is part of the Commerce Department, which would be hit by an overall 18 percent budget reduction from its current funding level.
The Office of Management and Budget also asked the Commerce Department to provide information about how much it would cost to lay off employees, while saying those employees who do remain with the department should get a 1.9 percent pay increase in January 2018. It requested estimates for terminating leases and government property disposal.
The OMB outline for the Commerce Department for fiscal 2018 proposed sharp reductions in specific areas within NOAA such as spending on education, grants and research. NOAAs Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research would lose $126 million, or 26 percent, of the funds it has under the current budget. Its satellite data division would lose $513 million, or 22 percent, of its current funding under the proposal.
The National Marine Fisheries Service and National Weather Service would be fortunate by comparison, facing only 5 percent cuts.
The figures are part of the OMBs passback document, a key part of the annual budget process in which the White House instructs agencies to draw up detailed budgets for submission to Congress. . .

Do it, do it,JUST DOOOOOOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIIIIIIT !
Good. Eliminate the “redundancy depts. of redundancy”.
Time to Say Au Revoir to Paris Climate Deal
Global Warming on Free Republic here, here and here
Before the screams of Climate Denier fill the air
Remember that **Al Gore** wanted to eliminate the whole of NOAA.
Another Agency, the the Dept of Energy that has spent years absorbing lose govt functions and growing like Topsy.
Long past time for a haircut.
:-)
Just to educate...
NOAA plays an important national strategic role, both in use of its weather satellites and atmospheric systems to support DoD and other agencies, as well as ocean surveillance and monitoring roles (think submarines and such). I am sure that there is Global Warming BS here to be cut, but at the core, they do have a vital role in supporting our military.
Dear Team Trump,
Be sure to eliminate budget lines for the execrable Gavin Schmidt and his team of climate propagandists at NASA:
https://www.giss.nasa.gov/staff/gschmidt/
Any legitimate scientific functions can be taken up by real, objective, honest scientists, assuming some can be found.
So far Trump has been flying solo. Where are our lovely conservative congressional leaders that have been just dreaming of a day when they had all the reins of power in D.C. so they could finally get America back on track?
17 percent? Hooboy, the oceans are gonna boil, I tellya. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Gavin Schmidt of NASA GISS is a dishonest propagandist and thus totally unfit to be paid by US taxpayers for allegedly “scientific” work:

Yeeeeeesssssssss!
“leading climate science agency”
Is that what they call it? How about the correct name: “climate propaganda agency”.
A steep cut doesn’t cut it. Yank every last penny.
Cutting off “Grants” is a good thing as they are part of Funding The Left.
The budget process is just getting started.
Keep the military role, but these guys h ave not been able to predict hurricanes reliably at all.
Their forecasting models are terrible. So cutting their funding might get rid of the useless chaff.
Their function needs to be outsourced! Trump could pay according to which private scientific group produces the best models. NOAA is not helping us. It’s a money pit.
To bad the cuts aren’t at least 25%. Thrre are too many government employees. Many are underworked and overpaid...and some sitcaround watching porn much of their “work” day.
