Ben Carson is now officially confirmed as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, following the Senate vote Thursday morning.
The approval locks in one of the few remaining cabinet members left to be approved.
The Senate floor voted the day before on the motion to invoke cloture on the nomination of Carson, passing the vote 62-37. The significant majority vote gave Carson a likely green light to be confirmed on Thursday.
Despite a controversial start to his nomination, it turned out to be all bark and no bite as his hearing went fairly smooth.
The former neurosurgeon passed through the Committee On Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs with a unanimous vote of approval on Jan. 24 and is finally making its way to the Senate floor, becoming one of few remaining cabinet picks to be confirmed.
Carson managed to receive support from both sides of the isle, even winning the approval of Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
Cardin, Carper, Menendez and Reed were surprises. None of those states will go red on Trump and the GOP alone without serious help from the opponents (NJ could because of Menendez and his scandals, he’d be better to step aside), so they had no real reason to go along here.
Great minds!! I thought the same thing about Menendez.
My great mind stops at not knowing what states the other folks come from.
Any of them black? Would be nice to see some of them vote a black man into the cabinet.
Thanks- was wondering how the vote was laid out.
Good luck to you and your team, Doctor Carson.
I still hope Dr. Ben finds a few good spokesmen to visit the Sunday Morning ‘inquisition’ shows on TV. I hope he outsources that task more that appearing himself. The Dr. doesn’t always come off very well on live TV, and can easily be distracted off topic.
If this position works for him, I would not be surprised to see him switch to something more directly related to Health or at least Health Care two years from now. I think the Doctor was somewhat overwhelmed with the depth and reach of the Surgeon General duties at this time.
He may have been more used to focusing on a small group of patients at a time.
Looks like she’s in a head to head fight with Schumer for “power”...Don’t know what she’s up to...but sure looks like she’s gonna make a move....
Congrats Dr. Carson and good luck managing that cluster(insert expletive here.)
Cardin voted yea? This might be the first thing he’s ever done that I approve of.
bump
About time! Congratulations, Dr. Carson.
NJ is a sprawl of urban. Menendez has an interest in development of urban areas.
Democrats want section 8 housing for all.
Or if he ever drank Russian vodka.
Or heard Condoleezza Rice speak Russian.
Or treated a head trauma victim of Russian roulette.
Damn right— start with Nelson’s land investment in S. Florida to try to cash in on yet another attempt for an Everglades large airport. This man is an utter embarrassment for Floridians.
Dig for the information— it’s out there. Push him publicly on him. He is a fraud— right down to his actions post Challenger
My question is how many more “racist” accusations are going to fly from the left since Carson is really not a “black black.” (”He don’t talk black!”)
Hurrah, Ben!
Too bad his first act will not be do remove the entire bureaucracy he is heading up.
Dems are just a bunch of bigoted racists, since Carson is black. Right?
Not really. It is more of a sprawl of suburban with urban and industrial areas in it as well as rural farmlands. Its nickname is The Garden State.
Claire McCaskill (MO) = Red State Roadblock
What a jerk.
I thought Trump was an anti-black racist!
Gardens of smokestacks perhaps!
As someone who once lived in Jersey for 20+years and married a life long Jersey girl from Union County, I can say though that much of Jersey is quite scenic and beautiful—it might not be for vast stretches like out west, but its nice.
Still though, jersey has much to benefit from urban renewel.
