1) Confederate flag? Who the **** cares!
2) Loud noise? Perhaps a fine.
3) Threats to "kill".Yes,punishment for that...even if there was no intention,or attempt,to carry out the threat.
4) Mentioning the race of the person you're threatening to kill means nothing!
Punishment for the threats...yes.
But 35 years is an outrage!

It was that terrible rebel flag that brought on the long incarcerations.

Boy I would hate to see the sentence for the people that kidnapped and video taped the assault on the disabled teen in Chicago.
Jordan Hill, 18; Tesfaye Cooper; 18; Brittany Covington, 18; and Tanishia Covington, 24, have each been charged with a hate crime, felony aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

This is a precedence that could backfire some day on some ‘racists of color’.

The purpose of hate-crime laws is reparations.

Don’t agree with what the guy did. I do think 35 years is a bit much.
While I detest this sort of thing, some perspective is still expected at the time of sentencing.
I didn’t read more than was presented here. Perhaps there’s more to it, and if it does warrant additional time, I’m not opposed to it.
I detest racism.

If the races were reversed would it even have been prosecuted as a misdemeanor?
If there isn’t a lot more to the incident the “street gang” conviction is insane.

Norton, who according to the Journal-Constitution is the mother of Torres's children, was sentenced to 15, serving six, for terroristic threats and street gang terrorism.Wait! We can't break up families. I got it directly from the left, you have to ignore the law for the sake of families.

Hate Crime law must be deemed unconstitutional. It marginalizes the actual crimes while establishing legal divisions between groups.

It does not matter if their names were Jose and Kayla, Billy Bob and Becky Sue or Mohammad and Akilah, they were making terrorist threats.
I have no sympathy for them.

35 years?! Murderers often get around 20. Sounds like the worst performance by a lawyer in the history of the legal profession.

It is the actions which can and should be punished. The motivation is immaterial so far as gauging penalties to be meted out is concerned.

I've said it before...if I ever wind up on a jury (State or Federal) hearing a "hate crime" case I'll listen carefully to the evidence on underlying charge (rape, assault or attempted murder for example). And regardless of the race/gender/ethnicity of the accused or the victim I'll vote guilty on the underlying charge(s) *if* the evidence warrants such a verdict.
But on any charge that's specifically of the "hate crime" variety I'll vote not guilty because I don't give a rat's hindquarters if the guy assaulted the victim because he was black. All I care about is that one person assaulted another without justification (race obviously isn't a justification).

I’ve got a confederate flag on my pickup. I better watch my speed when driving.
