BEIRUT (Reuters) French far-right National Front presidential candidate Marine Le Pen canceled a meeting on Tuesday with Lebanons grand mufti, its top cleric for Sunni Muslims, after refusing to wear a headscarf for the encounter.
Le Pen, among the frontrunners for the presidency, is using a two-day visit to Lebanon to bolster her foreign policy credentials nine weeks from the April 23 first round, and may be partly targeting potential Franco-Lebanese votes.
Many Lebanese fled to France, Lebanons former colonial power, during their countrys 1975-1990 civil war and became French citizens.
After meeting Christian President Michel Aoun her first public handshake with a head of state and Sunni Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri on Monday, she had been scheduled to meet the Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian
He heads the Dar al-Fatwa, the top religious authority for Sunni Muslims in the multireligious country.
I met the grand mufti of Al-Azhar, she told reporters, referring to a visit in 2015 to Cairos 1,000-year-old center of Islamic learning. The highest Sunni authority didnt have this requirement, but it doesnt matter.
You can pass on my respects to the grand mufti, but I will not cover myself up, she said.
The clerics press office said Le Pens aides had been informed beforehand that a headscarf was required for the meeting and had been surprised by her refusal.
But it was no surprise in the French political context.
French law bans headscarves in the public service and for high school pupils, in the name of church-state separation and equal rights for women. Le Pen wants to extend this ban to all public places, a measure that would affect Muslims most of all.

She could have wore a scarf with a Crucifix print.
She just won the election.
It was a requirement in the Catholic Church.
For receiving the Eucharist, not at all times.
My dad didn’t wear suits but he always wore slacks and button up long sleeved shirts and he was a blue collar worker most of his life. He didn’t even own a t-shirt. When he got hot or had to get his hands dirty, he rolled up his sleeves.
I still wear a hat every day; always have, always will.
I prefer Stetson Midland style range hats and Fedoras.
I wear a Browning ball cap a lot. :-)
For Michael O, that was just a costume.
“She” looks as “happy” as always.
On “I Love Lucy”, you rarely ever saw Ricky Ricardo not wearing a suit.
That's right. Wearing a headscarf to appease some muzzie is like kissing their ring.
Good for her , No Slave Scarf
Yes...at all times in church.
1917 Code of Cannon Law : “women, however, shall have a covered head and be modestly dressed, especially when they approach the table of the Lord.”
Key phrase is especially when approaching the table of the Lord. One approaches the “table of the Lord” at Eucharist. As well, covered head didn’t necessitate headscarf, just a covering which could be as simple as a veil.
Some still do.
My wife and I both wear helmets on our bikes.....................
>Yes...at all times in church.
That’s just as bad as any islamic rule regarding headgear.
More about being respectful and imitation of Mary. Don’t think I’ve ever see a statue of Mary without a head covering. You didn’t get stoned if you forgot your scarf.
I lived it....
