While Rex Tillerson is on his first overseas trip as Secretary of State, his aides laid off staff at the State Department on Thursday.
Much of seventh-floor staff, who work for the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources and the Counselor offices, were told today that their services were no longer needed.
These staffers in particular are often the conduit between the secretarys office to the country bureaus, where the regional expertise is centered. Inside the State Department, some officials fear that this is a politically-minded purge that cuts out much-needed expertise from the policy-making, rather than simply reorganizing the bureaucracy.
There are clear signals being sent that many key foreign policy portfolios will be controlled directly by the White House, rather than through the professional diplomats. Not a single State Department official was included in the White House meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week. Trumps son-in-law, Jared Kushner - who has no regional expertise or diplomatic experience - had a greater role in the meeting than the Senate-confirmed secretary of State.

No.
Never in the Continental United States.
Frozen Aleutian islands, or Island nations where few speak english and there are thirty different untreatable diseases for every doctor.
“Obama Appointees Preventing Mattis From Rebuilding The Military, Says Armed Services Chair.
When will this be drained, come on folks! get to it!”
Yes, Mattis needs to purge his equivalent of “The Seventh Floor,” and do it NOW!
You don’t even need to be a sociopath. Just feel strongly about a subject and be resolute and clear. The test is meant to work with an interview where the interviewer causes stress and catches slip-ups. 90% of the polygraph is the interview and the mechanical aspects of it are just a minor tool.
Bet they thought they would never be leaving ‘seventh heaven’...
This is a good start. There is however, a disturbing thing that I read has happened. Tillison was promised a free hand in selection of staff for some key countries. Rence somehow or other has managed to fill many of those slots with establishment types.
This group high - jacked our Republic long ago, and have been engaged in destroying it while lining their pockets. It’s high time they are disposed of.
“you know, the folks who brought us deba’athification and the rise of the insurgency in Iraq.”
State under Bush froze out the only Iraqi leaders who could have prevented it.
“Id rather have policy decided by the next 500 Home Depot customers than our top 500 holdovers at State.”
Good one.
and the swamp gets drained a tiny bit more ...
Send this one up the ladder; there are a couple of FReepers who have the ear of the lower reaches of the Administration...
yes
Winning.
I read them too. So many tears.
How about opening a consulate in Libya with all of them?
This time, make sure we don’t have a safe house.
DoS has long since outlasted its usefulness and purpose. Back in the day of Jefferson, it took weeks and months to travel the world. So, of course their needed to be embassies and staff to advance America’s agenda, policies, treaties and protect America’s interests.
Now, with air travel being what it is, with communications being what they are, the country doesn’t need hundreds of employees, most of whom do absolutely NOTHING, to be on the government payroll, nor their spouses getting do-nothing jobs, in the embassies.
I worked for those clowns, doing security for them in Baghdad. Nothing but a bunch of Anti-American, radicals that love living in foreign countries on the taxpayer dime. When ISIS was advancing on Baghdad, they evac’d all non-essential personnel from the embassy. Apparently it was hundreds of people. If they’re non-essential, what in the f*ck are they doing there in the first place?
So many people have no idea what we’re paying for. We have Leftist college kids getting jobs as FSOs, so they can live in foreign countries, to do absolutely NOTHING. State Dept has people that work in the ECON department. What exactly will those people, assigned to the ECON department, while assigned to the US Embassies all over Europe, tell any of the bankers or government officials about their banking systems. Those banking systems have been in existence longer than ours.
What exactly would a State employee do in trade negotiations? Pretty much, all of them have never had a real job. I like Trumps plan to send the meanest motherf*ckers from Wall St, to do that job. Not some Leftist, who knows absolutely nothing about business and trade.
Realizing that the Sec of State is 4 or 5, in order of succession if a catastrophic event happens, so I don’t think we could or should get rid of it. But, it should morph into a position where it manages and helps out with the businessmen that should be doing the negotiating on the countries behalf and handling its customary role with VISA and Passports and helping American citizens, while they’re overseas.
Your graphic is funny!
I’ll work for Tillerson
As would I . B.A. International Relations.
