He did his country a great service, but he also broke the law.
If Donald Trump doesn't understand now, he will eventually. Integrity and truth ultimately do matter, and if he wants to be a successful president, he's going to have to appoint people to high office who won't violate the public's trust.
That means appointing more men like Neil Gorsuch and James Mattis. And it means keeping David Petraeus out of the White House...
It's no understatement to say that by the September 2008 -- when he turned over command in Iraq to General Raymond Odierno -- he was an American hero, one of the great generals of modern times. Then he betrayed his family, violated the law, and established a precedent for prosecutorial favoritism that haunted America during the 2016 presidential election.
The facts of his case are simple and disappointing. Petraeus had an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, and provided her with notebooks containing highly classified information. Compounding his offense, he apparently initially lied to the FBI when they confronted him in 2012, denying that he had provided any classified information to his mistress...
Now is not the time to exchange one lying public servant for another. Mr. President, find another man of General Mattis's caliber...

French = The stopped clock.
Never Trumper, recruited by Kristol to run as an Independent, ultimately passed and was replaced with Egg McMuffin.
Just say no to anyone with a connection to NR.
I’ll bet this the trick.
(Trump already passed on Petraeus)
“Trump better not pick Petraeus!”
Trump doesn’t.
French claims a moral victory. “Look! Trump is listening to me!”
I have understood him to basically be aligned as a Democrat since I first read of his work in the 101st in the Iraq invasion.
Not that I disagree with him about Petraeus, but David French is a literal cuckservative.
Should Eisenhower have fired Patton over the slapping incident? Should Lincoln have fired Grant because he was a drunk? The big one: Should Truman have fired MacArthur?
Once you lie, stick to it. It should have ended up with her word against his. And if she had classified info in her possession as evidence, she should have been prosecuted. However, he DID break the law.
I imagine it came from some establishment type (i.e. McCain, or W. Bush groupie) come to mind.
In the middle of a fire you don’t give more fuel. Petraeus is already compromised. It would be foolish, unless it is an operation, to throw a line of attack to the alt-left.
Petraeus isn’t MacArthur. He’s a globalist liberal.
On top of D.P.’s woman/security problem (and it is BIG), the guy is as anti-gun as Hell.
From an Gun Owners of America email that I just got a few minutes ago:
“Unfortunately, someone in the administration must really like Petraeus, because now his name is being considered again — despite the fact that he is a convicted criminal.
For leaking national security secrets.
To his mistress.
If appointed, Petraeus would still be on probation — while serving in the country’s most sensitive national security post.
And that’s the “good” part.
On the “bad” side, Petraeus is an anti-gun loon who was co-founder, with the husband of Gabrielle Giffords, of Veterans Coalition for Common Sense — a phony organization of “useful idiots” designed to convince politicians that veterans favor gun control.
An Anti-gunner as the National Security Advisor Could Inflict Much Damage
As National Security Advisor, Petraeus would be the arbiter of intelligence coming in from the CIA, FBI, NSA, State Department, and other intelligence sources.
Among the issues which could come across his desk is the question of whether to revoke anti-gun arms trade (ITAR) regulations — and the question of whether to withdraw from the UN ATT.
Petraeus could be expected to argue the anti-gun side of both of these issues.
Unless Trump withdraws ITAR guidance, it will be effectively illegal to be a “gunsmith” with respect to any firearm on the Munitions List or the Commerce Department’s Arms list.
You would be considered a criminal “gunsmith” if you took a tool to a gun (other than for purely cosmetic purposes) or if you replaced a part, one-for-one, and the new part made the gun function better.
Also under ITAR regulations, you would be a criminal if you conveyed any “how-to” information on the Internet with respect to any Munitions List gun.
Petraeus is expected to fight for the continuation of both of these ITAR interpretations.
In addition, Petraeus could be expected to fight for the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which would require a national gun registry — and which would allow any president to ban all handguns, all semi-autos, or most AR-15 ammunition — all by executive fiat.
It has been said that, “Personnel is policy.”
And Petraeus, if he were appointed National Security Advisor, would represent anti-gun policy.”
