"OROVILLE, Calif. - An immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.A hazardous situation has developed with the Oroville Dam emergency spillway. Officials say that operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure.
Failure of the emergency spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville.
... Officials are anticipating a failure of the auxiliary spillway at Oroville Dam within the next 60 minutes ..."

Gah, I mis-spelled Oroville in the title in the rush to get this out.
That’s a reservoir, and a big one at that. This is bad.
Terrifying-——time for prayers.

“Thats a reservoir, and a big one at that. This is bad.”
3.5 million acre-feet! And yes, it’s bad
“Live stream”
Yes indeed
They haven’t set up reverse flow on the highway? That’s just incompetence.
Yup. One of my friends was just screaming at me about “contra flow”.
"A Mighty Fortress is our God
A bulwark never failing
Our Helper, He amid the flood
Of earthly ills prevailing....."
Amen...so be it.

IMO the Department of Water Resources is releasing water through the main spillway so as to time the extension of the zipper effect to the top of the dam to coincide with the extension of the emergency spillway zipper. This will delay the final dam failure as long as possible, and save lives downstream.
Then several million acre feet of water will deluge through what had been the Oroville Dam.
If they are really ordering an evacuation, then why are they not using ALL lanes.
This happened during a hurricane in the Charleston, SC area and the government did not plan an all lane evacuation. This resulted in people spending 8-10 hours in the car stalled in traffic, and could have been a disaster had the hurricane hit and not veered off to sea. It takes a lot of planning by emergency planners to do an all lane evacuation, and in South Carolina after the near disaster, the governor ordered an all lane evacuation planning for the next time.
I hope no one is endangered by lack of all lane evacuation planning.
Holy cow, I lived in Sutter county for a year, and visited Oroville dam a few times. There is a huge reservoir on one side and an extremely steep valley on the other side. I use to get sweaty palms driving on top of the dam.
Best luck to all affected.
Father God, i pray for Your perfect intervention, that innocent life and property may be saved, that there might be time for safe evacuation and that faults may be discovered and quickly repaired, but that, as always, Your will be done. In Jesus’ our Saviors’ beloved Name. Amen.
