The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

My concern is erosion to the ES, as well.

They’ve progressed bigly overnight. Filling in main erosion gully at aux spillway with concrete slurry and rock.

They’ve got to pick up the pace.

The emergency spillway cannot be shut down. Runoff from upcoming storms will cause the lake to rise again, and likely spill over the ES again.

The parking lot area is not a designated spillway. Erosion to that area is a big concern for future spillovers. The water inlet in front of the parking lot is another problem

i just noticed something on the main spillway at the end of that now taped video..

there is more erosion starting to eat away the hill side on the north wall of the main spillway...about 1/2 way down where the now waterfall is.....I believe this is new

I think its only a matter of time before the rest of the bottom section of the wall on the north side of the main spillway is destroyed

There’s a lot of sentiment in the water towards the power plant.

Looks like that road in front of the parking was about to giveaway, too.

2:08 to 2:20, look at the face of the weir.

Dark dripping-like patch partway down the face...

The parking lot area is not a designated spillway.

About a day before the emergency spillway started overflowing, one of their engineers in a briefing said that the parking lot was designed to be part of the system. He recalled that, at one time, people were planning to build some bleachers somewhere on the parking lot; and the safety engineers vetoed it because it would have interfered with the parking lot's drainage function.

These people are getting a lot of work done. Bless them.

WildHighlander, I see what looks like dripping on the face of the emergency overflow.

Is that normal?

Per KCRA, the mandatory evacuation has been lifted, reduced to Evacuation 'warning'.

Mandatory evacuation orders near Lake Oroville lifted

Imho, this quite premature, tho I'm sure everyone wants to go home   :-\

I think they should reduce the flow out of the main spillway soon...

again the next storm system is not as warm as the last and ones after that look even colder so much of the precipitation will fall as snow

Just catching up now...evac lifted. Good news, if there is still concern with coming rain they can get things in order before having to leave again. Thanks for pings today!
