The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

I wonder whether Beale AFB, home of the U-2 and SR-71, will evacuate. It’s located on a flat plain about 10 miles east of Marysville and Yuba City, which were evacuated yesterday.

Second idiotic force was curtailing the outflow of the damaged spillway to reduce silt in the river to protect fish.

Same idiotic mentality here do everything to protect salamanders. $$$$$$$$$$$. Ain't that right, txhurl. Haha, our cats are constantly eating salamanders.

The cave cricket, blind spider, snail darter, warbler, etc...

This was/is pretty scary, although they at least have two extra spillways. It seems Oroville is 3X the size/capacity of Travis. Are you up by Starcke dam?

From your shot there I see that on the right hand third of the emergency spillway the earth overburden that provided downhill ballast to the 30’ tall spillway is scoured away. Additionally the scouring of overtopping water has exposed the sub-grade below the concrete lip to the emergency spillway. This leaves this portion of the spillway with no ballasted backfill opposite water pressure when the lake is full and also leaves the spillway much more subject to abrupt failure when the lake fills.

This condition makes it absolutely imperative that the controlled spillway be used and kept protected because now dumping in advance of coming storms is absolutely critical.

It the emergency spillway comes into play again and the 30’ tall section that is 200’ +/- wide rips out, (1) that is a sudden damaging flood let loose in the river below but also (2) it is a buzz saw of water action tearing into that area of the lake edge perhaps creating a deep failure.

In addition to determining how the fish handle the silt and turbid water flow it might behove the employees of the State of California to determine how the Oroville and Yuba County residents handle the same.

The emergency spillway is eroding badly.

Whitewater — OK
Muddy water — BAD. VERY bad.

The dam proper is not in jeopardy, but there is a whole lot of muddy water boiling up below the emergency spillway, which means that there’s active hydraulic excavation going on below the face of the emergency spillway.

That is a HUGE problem because the Emergency spillway is nearly as high as the main portion of the dam, itself. So, if the Emergency Spillway gets breached, it won’t matter that the main part of the dam is still standing firm.

Worse, though, a breach below the face of the Emergency Spillway would permit lateral erosion at an alarming rate that COULD traverse sideways from the Emergency Spillway, to the Main Spillway, which would undercut and topple the topworks of that structure. From there, nothing could stop that lateral erosion from continuing on to the main portion of the dam.

This is a very serious situation.

Excuse the reply for possibly looking argumentative — there is no water going over the emergency spillway today. See the link just above your post for a great helicopter overflight video from today.

I would have to say that the footage from today that you have at 593 is some of the best for an overview of all aspects and features of this dam, spillway, spillway outflow with giant pot hole, emergency (or auxiliary) spillway with its 30’ tall lip and damage below from the last two days.

I’m not seeing anything from the youtube link but foggy horizon. Weird.
