Among the initial opposition to Betsy DeVos' confirmation this week as education secretary were calls on social media by parents, including liberals, to start homeschooling their children.
That reaction to DeVos a billionaire school-choice advocate who has never worked, attended or sent her kids to a public school reflects how polarizing her nomination was.
It also comes layered with paradox.
That's because DeVos, whom the Senate confirmed Tuesday to head the Education Department, is herself a big proponent of homeschooling.
In a 2013 interview with Philanthropy magazine, DeVos, who has invested in private and charter schools and is an advocate for their expansion, said homeschooling was "another perfectly valid educational option."
She continued:
We've seen more and more people opt for homeschooling, including in urban areas. What you're seeing is parents who are fed up with their lack of power to do anything about where their kids are assigned to go to school. To the extent that homeschooling puts parents back in charge of their kids' education, more power to them.
DeVos' emphasis on school choice is a natural fit for the homeschool movement, whose members span the political spectrum but are largely conservative Christians who resist government oversight. That group has helped fuel remarkable growth in recent years, carrying the movement from the fringe and closer to the mainstream.

Too much to ask for? You may be right.
Funny I was going to add a second post that says that but you beat me to it ;)
I looked at the source article and the writer is the usual smug kid hurling invective from his little cubicle somewhere in DC or NY. What a lead sentence, eh? Anger, inaccuracy and smears all wrapped up in a so-called news story.
I also note that NBC sites have no comment sections. Typical.
HOMESCHOOL by libs = dumb leading the dumber .
Only dims could shriek against Ms. DeVos because she was for school choice and then demand school choice for themselves.
And these are the people who think they should be running this country.
Home schooling would be the best thing ever for most of these kids.
Which is why it’s all talk for progressives; 99% won’t do it. It’s like threatening to leave the country because Trump won.
Nailed it. Though I would say far less than 1% of these progs would lift a finger to homeschool their kids.
Does anyone have a list of the celebs who moved out of the US since Trump won?
Lol! I almost said that but truly some of those folks are heroes
I know I’d never set food in their classrooms
So the loons are threatening to homeschool which will take money away from their beloved school system. This is hilarious because these people will be the first to start crying and whining about how much time and effort go into homeschooling. Next thing you know, they will be asking for tax credits because they teach their kids.
Gee, isn’t it illegal to home school in Buffalo, according to that woman who was arrested last week?
Well said.
Is that a bad thing?
This is great news! The Libtards are going to keep their problem children home.
That’s a plus...........Winning
Take your kids out of the Ayers/Alinsky/Zinn indoctrination centers, that’ll show them. Make the libtards parents spoon feed it to their kids every day and have to answer “how come/why” when their child pupil challenges liberal mantra.
I cannot image them doing any worse a job than the current bureaucracy. The good news is that liberals will become enemies of public (mis)education, though I rather doubt it. They don’t want to home school or do anything that will inconvenience themselves.
This is absolutely nothing but empty posturing.
Let them - home school (the left indoctrinate their children themselves) - and one consequence will be reduced funding for their precious public schools, which relay on attendance figures for the allocation and state and local funds.
For the most part, that won’t happen. For many parents the schools don’t exist for the student to acquire knowledge, but it is a free baby sitting service that the taxpayer supports.
Ironic that liberals might now feel compelled to start home schooling their kids. Imagine that one of little Heather’s two mommies might have to forego an anti Trump pussy hat rally to stay home and teach her kid about Marxism and man caused global warming.
The voucher system (money from the feds strings attached) is a scam to get control of private schools and cannot be supported by any republican who isnt a traitor. There are other ways itcould be handled.
So when millions of people send their kids to home school, charter schools and private schools, the NYT will see that not as a vindication of De Vos, but as a complaint against her?
