“FWIW, I’m a Dem. I just don’t vote that way.”

How does that work? I’m truly curious, not being hostile.

I would assign to you the appellation of “Truman Democrat”.
One who is compassionate for the down-and-out but still requires a strict reading of the USConstitution.

Jack Kennedy was the last of this kind; Bobby wasn’t all in with Jack, either.

This country's far too fat,far too comfortable. We need experiences at least similar to (but not necessarily identical to) what my parents experienced during the Depression.Such an experience would reacquaint us with what's *really* important.

I agree.

Hopefully that is the case.

I’m still a bit concerned about the Church that Gorsuch is accused of attending. IMHO that is a Satanic Church that has subverted the gospel and is teaching doctrines of demons. I can’t see how anyone who is a true follower of Christ would be caught dead in that Church.

I believe “All leftists lie”, or “All liberals lie” would be a true and defensible statement.

I understand that a person can be a democrat and still be conservative in their beliefs - but there will still be a certain amount of ‘guilt by association’ as it becomes harder and harder to distinguish a democrat from the base.

The perception is that to be a democrat is to be a liberal.

To admit it on FreeRepublic is rather brave.

CT might be the epicenter of RINO-ism, the GOPe and residual NeverTrumpism. This phenomenon is centered in Fairfield County, and those who derive from that area, not surprisingly. I’ve met quite a few Republicans in CT who openly admit they voted for Clinton. Towns (like my own) that reliably voted Republican in past elections flipped and went for the Crook in November. This observation alone leads me to believe there is very little hope for CT.

It's not just "Rino-ism". It's fear. Very few people I talk to in my town (small rural near the shoreline) will admit that the really think like conservatives but still vote for dems. My town was solid GOP for years and about 8 years ago it flipped and will likely never go back. Too many people are afraid to buck the small town cabals. They are afraid of what their liberal neighbors will say/do.

My town did vote for Trump but every other ticket went dem.

Well, speaking for myself, folks can and have insulted me. Lefties, righties, ‘Rats, Pubbies. I believe what I believe. Insults won’t change that. But why risk alienating folks who could/would make great allies? I used to be a five alarming, flaming lib. There is intelectual life after liberalism. Minds can change. :-)

As one who has held on too long to a denomination going a sinful direction, the UMC, and who has only recently early retired to get out from under it, I can understand clinging to a denomination because of a liking for its worship patterns.

While the Episcopal Church has few conservative congregations, it does have some, and it has its AFRICAN churches which are bible believing, and smack in the middle of historic Christianity. (The same with UMC’s African churches.)

In Gorsuch’s defense, he is a Denver native, and his residence with the 10th circuit was in Denver. I wonder if he was attending a childhood church.

I don’t know that, but I suspect it.

That doesn’t mean it hasn’t affected him negatively in some respects.

I’m convinced that most politicians have committed at least one felony to get where they are.

It is possible that there are other Democrats that post on this site that could be encouraged by your presence. It is truly a blessing to hear that you are a recovering liberal.

I admit that seeing your post admitting to be a Dem was something of a shocker . . . kind of like a Catholic in a room full of Baptists.

In fact, it would be great at some point to see someone post a vanity on this very subject - how a Democrat can be a Freeper. You’ve been here since 2000 so maybe you did do that (I’d love to see the link if so).

If more of us knew that there were honest Democrats on board they might be more careful in their broad strokes. I have made such statements, but for the most part I have tried to use ‘liberals’ or ‘leftists’ in my criticisms.

FReep on!

You can not separate the member from his associations. Barry was Barry to some degree based on the influence of the wrong right reverend Wright. George Tiller was a member of a far left church that supported the abortion industry.

That Gorsuch could sit through the teachings of his church is most disturbing and gives me pause that he could be an honest broker on the court.

On the other hand it is also possible that he is what he is religiously because of his family. I know that many good people are sitting in rotten churches because of the family structure. I sincerely hope that this is the case with the nominee.

FWIW, I think that there are 2 kinds if lefties: idiots/ignorants and ideologues. I was one of the former. The seeds of my conversion were sown in 1986 when I spent 6 months in Europe. Made me very glad to be an American, something I had taken for granted. In 1998, we got internet access. Around the same time, thanks to Newsweek (heh heh heh) I was introduced to FreeRepublic, the Drudge Report, and Rush Limbaugh. Those exposures led to others. I was getting more info, from more viewpoints. Lots of that info jibed with my life experiences, and I realized after a while I was no longer a lefty.

Also, in 1986, we spent a month in West Germany. We got a chance to see an area of the border between East and West in all its ugliness. My love affair with communism died after that.

Perhaps this verse can shed light, although the context is quite different than mere politics. "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness" (Roman 1:18). The phrase, "who hold the truth in unrighteousness" contains the word, "κατέχουν" which means 'to hold down' or 'suppress' the truth. The idiot/ignorant, in my opinion, are those who after being confronted with the truths of patriotism actively push those truths away and replace them with things that they 'feel' are more rational - such as 'love trumps hate' and elevates their feelings above the constitutionality of our system. After choosing those things that 'feel' good or makes rational sense to them - they become anti-American in their politics. In your case, you apparently had some notions similar to the above but when confronted with the 'facts' - rather than argue with them - you freely accepted them with the result being that you chose to embrace the principles of the American way of life. And I am glad you did!

You still have not given a reasonable explanation why you belong to the party of abortion, homosexuality and atheism. It is like saying “I am a great person but I don’t mind living in a sewer with a bunch of vermin.”

Personally, I would agree that any time a judge’s neutrality is called into question that I find it disheartening.

That’s not aimed at the one making the claim.

That’s aimed at the judge who isn’t transparent enough to appear neutral in his judging.
