A top Senate Republican is warning that the Senate could work around the clock as they try to confirm three more of President Trump's nominees.
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) stressed that how late the Senate is in session is up to Democrats. Absent a deal, he said lawmakers will stay in Washington through Saturday.
"We can do it cooperatively so we can burn time when we're out of session or if they won't agree to that, we can stay in session 24 hours," he told The Hill, asked about the schedule for the rest of the week.
Senate Republicans want to confirm Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) for attorney general; Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) for secretary of Health and Human Services; and Steve Mnuchin for Treasury secretary.
Unless both sides can get an agreement to speed up debate time, a final vote on Sessions will take place on Wednesday night, Price early Friday morning and Mnuchin on Saturday.
Cornyn said Republicans are ready to stay in 24/7 if that's needed. "A lot of our members are happy to do that," he said.
One Republican senator has to preside over the Senate when it's in session. Top lawmakers in both parties have previously threatened weekend work, though lawmakers could ultimately reach a deal.
The threat for a dayslong continuous session comes after Democrats pulled an all-nighter to protest Betsy DeVos's nomination for Education secretary.
Though Democrats ultimately failed to block her nomination, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) brushed off a question about if Democrats felt they're strategy is working.
"We're going to have long debates on Sessions and we're going to have debates on Price," he said.
But Schumer sidestepped specifically threatening another all-night session, telling reporters to "stay tuned."
And in other breaking news both JFK and Elvis were spotted on the Moon playing golf.
YAY
In the meantime, the Obama appointees are furiously burning records and erasing hard drives.
What took so long? Last week, Al Franken did that disgusting diatribe of personal insults against Sessions and Cruz. There’s no way the dems can walk it back. At that point, nothing makes sense except the ‘pubs using their majority to push things through.
do it!
so far the D’s have not identified a single major problem with any of the nominees
if they do, so be it...discuss it....consider it...
but since all the nominees look pretty darned good so far, then yes please get them confirmed !!
all this angst is ridiculous and makes the D’s look like complete ah*les
Sore losers, obstructionists, and hypocrites, the whole lot of them.
They’d be howling like banshees if Hillary had won and the Republicans were doing this.
Who raised Cornyn from the dead? I haven’t heard a peep out of him since he begged for my vote in the last election.
Well said, you’re right.
Chuckie and the Dems are putting on a show for the far left and they’re making themselves fools in eveyone elses eyes.
yes, the D’s are acting like real jerkoffs and they’re making themselves the butts of ridicule and derision “from sea to shining sea”
if they actually do have something seriously negative about a particular nominee, FINE they SHOULD bring it up for discussion....fine and dandy
but so far they haven’t come up with a single thing...
the nominees continue to look very good.... and the D’s keep painting themselves as ... delusional ... it is very sad how they are behaving, imho
Ha! Good question...Maybe a big contributor gave him the word to get on the stick.
Even on this chart, it's crystal clear Trump's nominees are lagging in being approved.
What isn't quite so clear, is that on day one, Obama had seven of his appointees approved. LINK
By the end of January 2009, 10 of Obama's nominees had been approved by the Senate. LINK
Trump have only five approved nominations in 18 days.
do the poor babies at least get time-and-a-half for overtime?
CONSIDER IT DONE!!
GET This ONE DONE!!
Roll up Sleeves and GET TO WORK!!!
Thanks for posting the chart and links, D1.
I tried to do it but couldn’t get it to copy so I only posted a link.
I gotta learn how to use this puter some day. LOL!
24 - 7 - 365 — DO IT!
Fourteen.
If they listened to Hannity today it may have motivated them.
He was throwing the biggest hissy fit I have ever seen about republicans stalling and delaying.
Glad to do it. Glad it helped.
Show some grit, Republicans. Just get it done. The Dems have crapped all over every thing conservative, every thing Republican for the past three decades. Grow a pair and move your agenda forward in all areas to completion. The sooner the better. And while you are at it, get those idiot senatorial twits from Alaska and Maine to get with the program or be relegated to inconsequential senatorial committee responsibilities.
