Seven percent of Catholic priests were accused of abusing children in Australia between 1950 and 2010 but the allegations were never investigated, "shocking and indefensible" data showed on Monday during an inquiry into paedophilia in the church.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard that 4,444 alleged incidents of paedophilia were reported to church authorities and in some dioceses, more than 15% of priests were perpetrators.
Australia ordered the Royal Commission in 2012 after a decade of growing pressure to investigate allegations of child abuse across the country, with the inquiry now in its final phase after four years of hearings. "Between 1950 and 2010, overall 7% of priests were alleged perpetrators," said Gail Furness, the lawyer leading questioning at the inquiry in Sydney.
"The accounts were depressingly similar. Children were ignored or worse, punished. Allegations were not investigated. Priests and religious (figures) were moved," she added.
"The parishes or communities to which they were moved knew nothing of their past. Documents were not kept or they were destroyed. Secrecy prevailed as did cover ups." The average age of the victims at the time was 10 for girls and 11 for boys.
Of the 1,880 alleged perpetrators, 90% were men. The St John of God Brothers religious order was the worst, with just over 40% of members accused of abuse. The commission has spoken to thousands of survivors and heard claims of child abuse involving churches, orphanages, sporting clubs, youth groups and schools.
The church in Australia set up the Truth, Justice and Healing Council to coordinate its response.
"These numbers are shocking, they are tragic, they are indefensible," its chief executive Francis Sullivan told the commission. This data, along with all we have heard over the past four years, can only be interpreted for what it is: a massive failure on the part of the Catholic Church in Australia to protect children from abusers. As Catholics we hang our heads in shame."
The inquiry has embroiled Australia's most senior Catholic cleric George Pell, now the Vatican's finance chief, who was questioned over his dealings with paedophile priests in Victoria state in the 1970s. Pell was also accused of historic sex abuse claims when he was the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney in 2002, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing. He has denied all allegations.
This issue is exactly why I left the Catholic Church. They refused to even acknowledge much less get rid of their pedophile priests, instead moved them to unsuspecting parishes so more children would be victimized.
And yes,I understand that married men molest too but I'd bet that they're less likely to that men who might be drawn to a celibate priesthood.
And how much of this reporting is fraudulent?
It happens often, motivated by hatred of the Church and get rich quick schemes.
Are these news outlets reporting sex abuse in the public schools?
So when your wife isn't around, do you get the urge to molest boys?
The idea that somehow men just want to have sex with anything, just because they can't have a woman, puts humans at the level of animals. In fact, most animals don't even behave that way. Its just a silly argument.
I think he references the three companies that insure the majority of Protestant churches in America (Church Mutual, Guide One, and Brotherhood Mutual)
In other words, investigators who have a solid professional interest in analyzing the actual numbers --- insurance companies that cover church abuse liability issues --- say the figures are the same across the board for Catholic and Protestant churches.
It is a very silly argument. We are suppose to have “virtue” when we are an adult—and be able to control base urges.
This hedonism and hyper-sexualization in our culture is trying to make men into these types who are kept in a hyper-sexualized state so that it is very hard to be celibate.
We used to have traditions and a “Justice” system which didn’t allow the de-sacralization of the sex act and mocking of true marriage 24/7 and where children are taught that “lust” is “love” to normalize vice, which makes sex meaningless and makes males and females into sex objects 24/7, which they do even in children’s movies-—to keep males in the sexualized state with artificial screens/ads/signs, etc to warp all desires and destroy moral formation. It is hard for boys today to mature in such a Weimar toxic environment which corrupts them and trains them to see women as objects—and males, too—just animals to be herded, controlled and used.
These perverse, corrupted males today are in ALL the churches and ALL the schools. This is not a Catholic problem-—the Jimmy Savile and Franklin Cover-Up and McMartin’s case prove it is an elitists’ Luciferean Rite of worship-—the orgies and pederasty and pedophilia and baby-sacrifice are actually led by satanists (Lucifereans). They lead the “culture” to warp the little children...and shape their worldview.
These molesters inside the church are evil and satanic and should never ever have been allowed into the priesthood. They have orgies, molest tons of boys, etc., and never went into the priesthood to be “holy”-—it was to have power and position to use other humans as an object. The Freemasons long ago took over the CC, and the Vatican bank, and they worship Lucifer now, (smoke of satan entered) and now priest prefer young boys and hate God, for their demonic worship which mocks God’s Design of the body.
Fr. Oko’s report on Homoheresy explains all the warped emasculated (no virtue) males, who went into the priesthood as a method to destroy Christianity. They did it in all mainline Christian churches; Pastor Bonhoeffer noted it in Germany in the 30s and America at the same time there Christianity has become so watered down it is worthless. They took over curricula in 1930, publishing companies-—all to corrupt and destroy Christianity—that which created the Age of Reason, Modern Science and US Constitution because they need ignorant, dumb, immoral people to be their slaves, for their orgies and rites.
One of the biggest things the inquiry is showing is that this type of abuse happened with almost any group, including all religious groups, both various Christian denominations, and non-Christian, and non-religious groups where evil people could use their position to get access to children.
The media really likes focusing on the Catholic Church, but the overwhelming evidence is this was far more 'universal' than that.
Sexually predatory men become involved in youth work--- schools, sports, scouts and the rest--- because "That's where the boys are."
it doesn't mean youth workers are drawn to become perverts. It's that perverts are drawn to become youth workers.
