A grand jury indicted Ronald Gasser Jr. on Thursday in the fatal shooting of the former N.F.L. player Joe McKnight, handing down a second-degree murder charge. The charge is more severe than the one that Mr. Gasser had initially faced in December, when critics complained that racial bias may have affected the investigation.

If convicted, Mr. Gasser, 54, would face life in prison with no parole.

Louisiana? From reading the article and everything else I've heard or read thus far, this looks like self-defense. He's certainly going to have to make that case to a jury, regardless of the charge.

If he reasonably felt threatened, it was self-defense, and he's going to have to convince at least 1 juror of that fact.

Looks like a severe over-charge to me... tragic all around.

The Jefferson Parish prosecutor may not convict Gasser, but they will bankrupt him.

He escalated and challenged the deceased. That makes it not self defense.
