I am beginning to believe that my liberal friends, of whom I am fortunate to have many, are collectively, absolutely clueless about what Donald Trump has done and is doing to them.

I have maintained a fascinated watch of The Donald since the earliest days of his campaign, when I warned fellow Republicans that he was a demagogue who knew exactly what he was up to and he needed to be taken seriously. I said much the same thing to dismissive Democrats and publicly predicted he would win in the last few weeks of the campaign.

Now we’re seeing the same dismissive attitude in what is passing for leadership in the Democratic party, while Trump is shoving through them like the proverbial crap through a goose.

I suspect the Trumpians couldn’t believe their good fortunes in having a precedent for what is, in effect, the French system of governance by decree — provided by Barack Obama’s active use of executive orders at the end of his term. There’s no need to wait for a shy Republican Congress to pass Trump’s initiatives; he simply decrees them and invites Congress to do something about it.

In doing the refugee freeze early on, he plays his strong hand to his supporters in the face of an absolutely predictable Democratic response. Result, much to the surprise of the traditional media: More than half the country approves, while the Democrats look as if they are doing nothing more than trying to vindicate themselves in the eyes of the country and proclaiming we all made some kind of mistake in electing Trump.

The author is no friend of Trump..or us...but it is a good analysis anyway. The problem for the Progressives (of both parties) is that they are watching this force of nature hit them like a tsunami and are just standing there saying, “it’s not real, it’s not real”.

Some Progs are trying to snap them out of it, but they are locked into their illusion of invincibility, that somehow they will cause him to resign because they are unhappy and breaking some windows.

Not just Progs, some Establishment GOP'ers I know are vocalizing anger at Trump for "moving too fast" and "he doesn't need to do so much" and that "he needs to take a couple days off"

That bespeaks a misunderstanding of business where a day lost is an opportunity lost. It also misunderstands that opposition to the left is like war, and requires total annihilation in a Patton-like manner. Trump is doing it. I can't friggin believe it, but he's doing it.

They're hurling every insult, trying every tactic, throwing up every barrier. Politicians would curl into a ball and beg for forgiveness from the press. Trump's rolling right over them like the III Army.

These are historic days.

Progs are in both parties. Some are not as socially liberal as others, so they can appear somewhat conservative. But the tell is their insistence on the transnational agenda over the well- being of the USA as a whole (not just the economics).

What a succinct and telling description.

The beauty of the situation is, Trump has already demonstrated, dozens of times, since June, 2015, that he’s not worried about what liberals or media-types think. If he thinks he’s right and has majority support, he just goes ahead and does it. (Ending foreign abortions, naming cabinet members, preventing muslim intervention, building a wall, naming a conservative to the court, etc.)

He’s doing so many things, so rapidly, that when they are screaming about one thing, he’s done two more things they hate. They can’t keep up. I am beyond impressed.

That's precisely how President Reagan operated, especially during his first term.

The MSM-Democrats were uniformly negative. He couldn't do anything right, and every single thing he announced, the MSM-Democrats said would never work, starting with the PATCO strike, through his strategy for handling the USSR, including SDI (Star Wars).

Every bit of positive economic news was minimized and reported grudgingly. Every positive jobs report was bundled with an equal number of words saying the jobs were hamburger-flipper jobs, or that the decreasing unemployment rate was raising the "specter of inflation" (which never happened).

He ignored the Left and the MSM, which I believe is why the Democrats took to calling him stupid, in various ways, including Tip O'Neill (Speaker of the House) calling him an "amiable dunce" on camera, on national television. They thought he had to be a dunce if he didn't see that he had to kow-tow to them.

Slowly but surely, the signs that we were on the right track became obvious. Everyone could see that things were improving.

But the MSM-Democrats kept trying, and in RWR's second term, they drew blood with Iran-Contra. Even then, President Reagan kept on plugging, not wavering from his three big goals: turning the economy around, rebuilding the military, and ending the cold war.

He accomplished all three, and lived long enough to see the Berlin Wall fall, just as he demanded, in person.

Thanks for that summary of RR’s two terms. I lived through that time and you are exactly right. But I did not have Free Republic or conservative radio to help me understand what was happening. Looking back at it, it became very clear to me what had happened.

In addition to the examples you cite, one thing I remember; there were NO homeless people prior to RR, then when he was in office, homelessness was a major national problem. Then when Clinton became president, there again was no homelessness.

I’ve actually heard something not unrelated from actual conservatives (not GOPe/progs) of the older persuasion. They’re not angry at all, but they’re expressing similar sentiments along the lines of “maybe he should take a couple days off” or “maybe he should slow down, he’s going too fast.”

These are also typically the older people who have problems with change and technology and updates. I’ve explained to them that this is the best strategy and as disconcerted as Trump’s pace has been for them, it’s far, far worse for the liberals.

I moved to Philadelphia in 1981, and encountered homeless people there, although the other students I knew called them "vent men." I had seen them before when I visited Manhattan, and I just thought they were part of big-city life. I didn't realize that their presence was connected with the shutting down of large insane asylums in the 1970s. Without the internet, there were many things that you could only wonder about back then.

I'm certain that homelessness will become a big issue again under President Trump.

The “amiable dunce” comment did not come from Tip O’Neill, it came from Democrat “wise man” Clark Clifford at a Georgetown dinner parties in 1981, who was later implicated in a banking scandal. Never happened on camera...

I'm not saying Clark Clifford didn't utter the epithet, and perhaps he even invented, but I heard Tip O'Neill say it on television, and I'm not the only one:
