FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - For more than 30 years, Kathryn Woodward has attended an interdenominational worship service each week at the World War II-era Memorial Chapel on Fort Jackson.
Today, the chapel, along with all other World War II-era wooden buildings on Army installations across the country, is slated for demolition. They are inefficient, expensive to heat, cool and maintain, and they dont fit the needs of the modern workplace, the Army says.

The person fighting for the chapel is my 92 year old mom. I have been a lurker since the late 90s and my husband suggested I should post this here to maybe get some people activated to help my mother save the chapel. Maybe there is someone here with expertise. Thanks!

Of COURSE it should be saved. We Americans have a terrible habit of tearing old things down, without keeping in mind the memories of heart associated with such things. Chapels & Church buildings are central in such memories--of weddings, baptisms, and funerals...and should not be destroyed just for "efficiency" sake.
Fort Meyer, next to DC is FULL of old, Civil War era buildings--for good reason. The brass there wouldn't think of tearing them all down.

I'd love to take one more walk...a quick walk...through a WWII wooden barracks like the one we were in in BCT in ‘69.Heated by coal...drafty...uuuggghhh.It would bring back memories.

I was so excited to see my grandparents church celebrating the 100th anniversary of their building, small town west Texas. It is a building, I am sorry your mother is losing her place to worship

Remember the church well did basic training at Ft Jackson early 72. I was at Fort Knox in '69.Never made it to the Armor Museum of the Gold Depository...far too tired. The church at Ft Jackson was clearly a historic site and important to many who served there...seems to me the DoD could take that into account.

I hope they do. Spent many services there.
