Currently, a half-billion dollars in taxpayer money is given to National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) each year. Trump plans to do away with that. The Hill has reported:
The Trump Administration needs to reform and cut spending dramatically, and targeting waste like the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities would be a good first step in showing that the Trump Administration is serious about radically reforming the federal budget, said Brian Darling, a former aide to Paul and a former staffer at the Heritage Foundation.
The Regan Administration attempted something similar in the 1980s, but was ultimately convinced against it. One of the cases made was that the government owes the American people access to news/information. Back then, there was no internet, only a few dozen televisions/news radio stations. They saw it as an actual public service (perhaps, rightly so). Today, however, broadcast television and FM radio is in a major decline with fewer and fewer viewers every year. After all, who feels like waiting for the 6 oclock news when you can just hop on the internet and get real-time news and current events?
On the Bernie Sanders campaign trail, he loved claiming that Norway was better than America. Well, Norway is planning to eliminate FM radio altogether. FM radio and satellite television are dying media forms that have been kept alive and propped up by government spending and the bureaucracy, so isnt it good that were pulling federal funding? If are profitable and do in fact have a strong audience, they wouldnt need to be subsidized with taxpayer money. Well, Hollywood doesnt think so:

Exactly and you have hit the nail on the head.
NPR “news” is marxist propaganda in support of the domestic enemy.
Visualize a poster of Trump al la Teddy Rosevelt. One hand holding his rifle, the foot resting on big bird, a basket of phesants with elmo and oscar the grouch hanging out with x’s on their eyes. The public will either be appalled or highly amused.
Classic music and opera?
Right now, I have Alexa. She plays anything from I want from a library of 100s of millions selections . For example, if I ask her to play Nessun Dorma, she gives me a choice of multiple renditions, including Pavarotti, the 3 Tenors, Paul Potts. Paul Robeson (find that one at a music store!) and about 6 others.
All by voice command, all free after the $179 initial purchase, plus there 1000 other things “she” does, even calling Uper or Lyft or ordering and delivering groceries!
Waiting to see leftists going through tote bag withdrawl.
It is a good thing that Downton Abbey has signed off.
NPR to finally get paid back for decades of naked political bias. Hopefully public universities will learn from this.
More of what I want to see. If you want money, get your own and stop coveting your neighbors money.
I don’t believe we’re having THIS discussion here, on FR....C’est la vie.
>But where is the great win in shutting down PBS?
‘Tis but one baby step in the *correct* direction: it is not a valid expenditure of taxpayer $$.
>
As flawed as its funding model is, it does offer a wealth of good programming and some of it is great, certainly a helluva lot more than replays of Lawrence Welk, as someone on this thread suggested. And, no, The Discover Channel and other for-profits wont easily be able to supplant the higher quality PBS shows

Then one is MORE than welcome to donate THEIR time\$$ for such endeavors. Like any\all biz, it should live by its own biz model.
>
I think the Hill and Politico articles are simply meant to foment dissent and that theres likely very little political will to get this done. In fact, I dont think Trump will push this through. Its more strategic for him and for us if he doesnt.
>
Oh, you were expecting accolades from the Socialist media?
What ‘strategy’ are you fomenting? To what goal? A Constitutional govt? Then defunding is the correct path.
All things considered - I like it! Why give the liberals money to propagandize in hushed voices and soft trendy background music
It seems when I first got on FR each post on a thread brought that thread back to the top of the page with the refresh button. Thus the often seen BTTT you see on some posts. I liked that method as it kept a hot subject in the fray. It was not so difficult to skim past the redundant headlines to see everything else, but I imagine it took a lot of bandwidth or site capacity.
Just like FR!!!
We don't need no steenking subsidies, ads or popups!!

You left out Ancient Aliens.
As an Earthling; I want to know why!?
Excellent.
Does your “correct direction” include unifying the country? I believe that is one of Trump’s stated strategic goals. Defunding PBS, a piddling budget item, takes us in the opposite direction, while satisfying the purist Conservative agenda merely for its own sake. Nothing much gained and a lot will be lost in the culture wars.
To have a unified country with a population as varied as ours, we will all have to give up a little something here and there.
Trump doesn’t do purist, he does practical. Let’s see what happens. I’m betting PBS stays pretty much as is.
