Air pollution in London passed levels in Beijing this week, figures have shown, with popular wood burning stoves blamed for exacerbating the problem. On Monday London mayor Sadiq Khan issued the highest air pollution alert in London for the first time, and said on Tuesday that the capitals filthy air is now a health crisis. Readings at 3pm on Monday showed that air at locations in the capital were worse than in notoriously smoggy Beijing, hitting a peak 197 micrograms per cubic metre for particulate matter on the Air Quality Index. Pollution in the Chinese city only reached 190, which is still deemed unhealthy.

Heads will roll.
Total BS. Where do these Londoners get all of their firewood?
wood pellets made in America are popular in Europe and most likely england
I lived in London in the late 80’s and I don’t remember a lot of wood being burned for home heating.
Something doesn’t smell right about this.
Although I could be wrong, I suspect that the “London fog” from coal fires was more unpleasant than the current air pollution caused by wood fires.
That’s my question too. More Fake News?
Those damn wood-pellet stoves.
Not that it should be terrible for ecosystems, but schadenfreude to those who think it’s better and just have to use it to be “hip”.
So when everyone was burning in the 1800’s this wasnt a problem?
They have a lot of Moslems in London. Do Middle Easterners hisrorically burn a lot of wood?
Wood pellets generally burn smoke free at a superheated temperature. A few are added at a time to a small fire, with forced air combustion.
The combustion gases must pass through the red hot coal bed for full oxidation, and then through a good heat exchanger.
But I'm sure not all pellet stoves are created equal.
Where do you think the deserts come from?
I hear environazis taste like chicken. Or maybe pork. Even better over a wood burning oven...
probably an atmospheric inversion or some other type of ordinary stilling of the winds around London. They have had a bit of wind this winter, so this calming is ‘on the unusual side’ and the London fogs are nothing like they use to be during WWII and earlier.
Just a political tempest in a Londoner’s tea pot.
***wood pellets made in America...***
And to think, Ben Franklin was worried that the good citizens of Philadelphia were burning up so much local wood that soon firewood would need to be imported from Great Britain.
So he invented the Franklin iron stove.
Now we are shipping wood to London for their stoves.
Conclusion: Wood stoves are convenient to blame for what is actually another source of the smog
An eco-nazi once told me that a wood burning stove is carbon neutral (whatever that means) and thus approved by the central committee. So there you have it.
Total BS. Where do these Londoners get all of their firewood? <<<<
EXACTLY!!!!...Real firewood is a luxury.....burning trash is a different story.....all smoke little fire..but it does emit some heat...and saves on the trash bill!!
When I first started traveling to London in the 80's most public buildings were black from the accumulated soot. However in recent years the air has been quite clean and you can see the color of the original stone on the Houses of Parliament. In contrast, some days in Beijing people can't see more than a block.
My B.S. detector is going off. I suspect the socialist/muzzie mayor is after some power grab to "solve" the problem.
I haven't been back in 40 years, but I can tell you the coal-fired cities in the Midlands were gaaack! to breathe in then. Not to choke, but it just smelled gritty and awful and sat in your throat a bit.
Can't speak for pellet smoke, but wood smoke smells so much better.
