Democrats seek delay on Sessions' confirmation vote for Attorney General

WASHINGTON (AP) – The top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee will request a delay on the confirmation vote on President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. That will push the panel vote until Jan. 31.

The Judiciary panel is scheduled to vote Tuesday on Sen. Jeff Sessions’ nomination. But committee rules allow any member of the panel to hold a vote over until the next week, and members of both parties frequently do. A spokesman for California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Monday that she will request the extra week “to give the committee more time to conduct its due diligence.”

At Sessions’ hearing earlier this month, Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said he looked forward to “moving to his appointment without delay.”

It's time to end that tradition

The Democrats need more time to destroy evidence.

They fear many of them may be prosecuted for their crimes.

Both parties have these fears.

My fear is that Sessions will not prosecute some that should be.

We all know a dozen or so names.

Sessions nomination will be small fry next week, when the Donald is going to reveal his SCOTUS nominee.

Jeff will get through whenever. meanwhile he can clear Loretta Lynch’s desk and go to work every day.

The Dems are truly afraid of Sessions, they know he will prosecute just about any skeleton he finds in any closet. The Dems are trying to bury evidence and need extra time to do so. That’s truly what this is all about.

This has nothing to do with how many votes it takes to confirm.

Oh brother. It's a week's delay and that's all. There are a ton of Senate rules and if you don't get used to it, you will drive yourself crazy. Things don't work in real time in Congress. Wait until legislation is trying to work its way through Congress and you will go crazy.

Some of the regs that need to get overturned will take years to accomplish.

If someone is in opposition to the new “Sheriff in Town”, they must have something to hide and need a thorough investigation.

After the vote and swearing in, Sessions should announce a special prosecutor to go after crimes of the Democrat party, especially Reid, Schumer, Pelosi et al.

I agree. But we need to fire the Obama cronies from the Justice Dept. first. Will Trump's hiring freeze block hiring good prosecuting attorneys?

Indeed—more time to commit, commence and cover illegal deeds.

They want assurances that Sessions won’t lock her up.

The full Senate could go ahead and vote without the committee if they delay too much.

The Dems are certainly willing to negotiate on the delay. What they would like is a few of these to hand out to their friends. That would do the trick. Instant confirmation.

The Democrats need more time to destroy evidence

They need more time to manufacture witnesses.

In 1987, I was the director of an important, federal/state funded program somewhere in the Northeast.

One fine day, an advocate/organizer called and asked if I could testify before a Senate committee the next day. The advocate was at that time quite well-known, but I was not.

All I had to do was tell the story of a patient who was being discriminated against in a certain way.

I was offered lunch with the Chairman, a news conference after, and the inside track to more $$ for my program.

The problem was, none of my patients were being discriminated against to fit the scenario, and I said so.

"Oh, no worries", I was told. "We have a script".

Since that day (OMG 30 years ago!) I have never taken a single word spoken in a Senate or House committee seriously.

The Dems need a delay to find their Anita Hill, or equivalent. Somebody who tried to give Sessions tickets to "Django Unchained", only to have him refuse to go. Or whatever. The lie is unimportant, the coverage of the lie is critical.

If the GOP gives them their week, they will find someone to testify, count on it.

“The Senate has worked with Sessions for how many years...”

Thank you - this is the point I was going to make.

Additionally, they’ve know Sessions was the nominee for a number of weeks.

Yes, screw ‘em - they’ve had plenty of time; no more “time outs”. Call them on their “due diligence” charade, stop playing nice with them, and let’s get on with it.

For crying out loud. Put the Senate in a 1 hour recess or 1 day, Trump will recess appointment everyone and then let them play all the delay games they want. Does Republican leadership have any idea how to fight

Whatever happened to loyalty and friendship...I’ve seen Donald Trump betrayed by ‘so called’ friends during his campaign. Does morality ever take precedent over anything anymore? Sessions is a very good man. There is no reason for this except pure evil.
