Donald Trump has given up his beloved Android phone ahead of todays inauguration, the Associated Press reports, though it is unclear what type of device he will use in the White House. According to The New York Times, Trump is now using a more secure, encrypted handset that was approved by the Secret Service. He also has a different phone number, the Times reports, citing people close to the president-elect.
Trump uses his Android phone to tweet, and he tweets a lot. Hes also been very accessible throughout the presidential campaign and transition, taking calls from reporters, politicians, and world leaders. Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister of Australia, called Trump to congratulate him on his electoral victory after getting his cellphone number from professional golfer Greg Norman.
That kind of accessibility has made life difficult for Trumps handlers, and it would have raised security concerns in the White House. It is unclear whether Trump will be given a modified BlackBerry, as president Obama was when he came into office. When he was elected in 2008, Obama publicly lobbied to keep his BlackBerry in the White House, contrary to the advice of lawyers and the Secret Service. The device he was eventually given had limited functionality, and only a small number of people knew his phone number or email address. (Obama eventually switched to a different phone.)
In November, The New York Times reported that Trump was concerned about having to give up his Android as president, and that he was worried about becoming isolated without it. According to the AP, Obama had a phone that allowed him to tweet from his official Twitter account, which Trump may find reassuring.
The Times reported this week that only a small group of people will have the number for Trumps new phone, though it is unclear whether his Android phone will be physically confiscated. The Newseum has reached out to the Trump team about including his old phone in its collection, according to the AP, but the museum has not heard back yet.
Although it’s a no-brainer, I remember a lot of drama with Obama and Clinton refusing to do this. I think Obama may have eventually followed the rules, but clearly Hillary never did. Trump? He just does the right thing. No need for drama.
If I recall DJT doesn’t personally use a desktop or laptop computer. He might actually be able to pull this off with one device. He will not be “losing” a dozen devices, anyway.
His Android may have been easy to hack...
Almost a guarantee his government phone is pre-hacked by the CIA.
I expect President Trump’s phone to be used and protected very differently from Hillary’s:
“CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin was so surprised to learn that Democratic nominee Hillary Clintons aides destroyed her phones with a hammer, she literally couldnt believe it.”
She thought that C, which stands for classified, stood for cookie, or something, Epshteyn said. She said the reason she used the private server was for convenience, that she only had one device, [but] she used 13 Blackberries this is somebody who is absolutely disqualified from becoming president. They destroyed Blackberries with hammers!
Evan, hold on, can you fact check? Baldwin asked. Evan Perez? Hammers? Fact check that for me, on the fly.
Yes they did, Brooke, Perez replied.
It was issued by the government one worlders so they can listen in to every conversation he has.
No Such Agency has a version of Android that removes all the preinstalled spy-ware and closes all the Goggle back doors. It is much leaner and faster than the commercial version.
One thing about “hacking” —
If “the Russians” hacked Hillary’s email, it would have been no big deal — except for the fact that Hillary and the DNC were doing bad stuff and when the American voters found out the truth, it (may have) negatively affected the election.
You think the CIA has “pre-hacked” Trump’s secure phone? Well, I don’t expect him to do bad stuff, so I expect the damage from the CIA to be minimal.
Almost a guarantee his government phone is pre-hacked by the CIA.
That thought immediately crossed my mind.
I don’t expect him to do anything ‘bad’ either...but I do expect the CIA (which has practically declared war on him) to transcribe everything ever uttered on that phone.
THIS is gonn’a be a fun ride.
and yet Hillary gets away with the bathroom server.
Yes. Refreshing.
He should be careful on the government phone and borrow someone else’s to tweet. Or have someone buy him a burner phone.
I’m sure he’s smart enough to figure something out. ;)
I’ve seen pictures of him on Trump Force One, using a MacBook.
He has had his own security detail. I wonder if he could have his own IT staff sweep that phone before he uses it?
Hillary runs an easily hackable server in the bathroom that contains classified data? What Difference Does It Make!!
Kellyanne Conway gets caught buying a burner phone for Trump? CATACLYSMIC CATASTROPHE ON THE SCALE OF WATERGATE! IMMEDIATELY IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE!
What brand was his Android?
That would be a great marketing point for that brand for the deplorables who don’t use Apple.
Before I get hammered by the Apple users, many of our conservative relatives and friends use an Apple I phone.
My wife and I like the freedom of apps and choices we have with our Android SmartPhones. We use the money we save on the phones and Tracfone to donate to our church, Salvation Army and grand kids education funds.
Admiral Mike Rogers probably personally gave our new Potus the phone you described.
Probably every adult Trump family member got a similar phone.
