In politics, as in sports, there is an offense and defense. In some sports the same players assume both roles, as in basketball and hockey, where a team may shift roles back and forth quickly as the game proceeds. In other sports, such as football, there are separate teams for offense and defense, specialists in their specific roles.
Political games often have separate teams for offense and defense; sometimes the political leaders, often their surrogates. In the case of Democrats, the media takes a prominent team role playing both ends of the field. The media can ignore unfavorable stories. A recent example is the sudden lack of interest or coverage of the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting after the shooters Muslim conversion was identified. And the media can play offense, as they are with ongoing and relentless attempts to discredit the incoming Trump administration.
Whats new this political cycle is a sportsman who can play both ends of the field, and well. The pitcher who can hit home runs. The quarterback who can also play safety and intercept passes. The Michael Jordan who can not only score points, but also block shots and steal the ball.
Traditional Republicans specialize in defense, although poorly, and have little offensive skill. Normally Republicans are defending themselves against being racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-immigration, Islamophobic, starving children, pushing granny off the cliff, and wanting blacks back on plantations.

Here the CRACKUP:
1) “First they needed control of the House to advance a conservative agenda, repeal Obamacare, seal the border, and so on. Done in 2010.”
2) “Then they needed the Senate too. Done in 2014.”
3) “They needed control of the White House, too, before going on offense. Done as of a couple of months ago.”
So now we’re at #4, and I’ll state it for the Republican Establishment:
4) We need control of the MEDIA, or we’ll be labeled as hate-mongers and our party invitations will dry up.
They had #4 ALL SET TO GO, especially with Jeb/Rubio/Kasich as the only possible winners in 2016...they could continue to act like the minority party, even while controlling all branches of government...powerless to do anything. They could keep complaining about Obamacare, but then blame the media for not letting them try to fix it.
...well, Trump comes along and doesn’t have time for that crap. One of the many reasons they can’t stand him. The Republicans had a GREAT THING GOING, collect the votes of people complaining about Democrats, get the chairmanships, go to swanky parties, and DO NOTHING and have someone (or something) to always blame.
Oh well...not so easy anymore.
Yeah, the D.C. UniParty is crying foul. He isn’t playing by their rules.
Teacher, when I was bully Johnny, he hit back and gave me a bloody nose! No fair!
“Bullying Johnny”...Sorry about that.
A new team. A new star athlete. What a great four, and hopefully eight, years ahead!
Trump is giving the GOP a new, winning playbook. One that actually works. But they will eventually throw it away and revert right back to their old establishment ways.
The GOP never seems comfortable with the concept of winning and the responsibilities that go along with it.
Right on.
No political organization should control the media. There shouldn’t be a “the media” and with the internet there isn’t one any more.
I consulted in academia for about five minutes. One of the many things that I learned from them was that "Success breeds expectations". Ergo, if you're never successful, then no one ever expects anything from you.
When was the last time *anyone* here on FR said, "Wow! That establishment GOP critter did a fantastic job on (whatever)! I can't wait to see what he/she does NEXT!!!" Nope...we're all pretty much consigned to the fools in DC talking a good fight, then selling us out at the end. No success = No expectations.
Trump will be successful, and the people he hires will hold their departments accountable for results. Establishment Republicans - particularly the DC bureaucrats - don't like that, it's much easier just to pose, pass the buck, and complain.
#4. Check.
No, we don’t have control of the media. Trump simply does an end run around it.
Twitter is the new media (at least until they shut down Trump’s account).
Compare him to Bush, who, when attacked, whimpered like a Dukakis mewling on the subject of his wife being raped.
The Left still can't believe that Trump hasn't apologized to Lewis. To make matters worse, Trump then went and met with MLK III, completely taking the wind out of their sails over the Lewis issue.
Which isn't going to happen.
good analysis
Great run down of why I have been so disappointed about the GOP for many years, although I would say that started much earlier... that would go something like:
1996-99 - abandoning Mr.Newt’s successful ploy, “Contract with America”, for little reason.
2002-07 - squandering the 2001 patriotism by succumbing to the Demodogs’ and DinoMedia’s characterization of Bush43’s clear mind that we need to WIN the battle against radical Islamofascists as wrong-headed.
2006-07 - idiotic GOPe concepts for “comprehensive immigration reform” before definitely securing the border.
It would be helpful if one of these billionaires bought NBC and put real journalists and newsmen in those seats. We need balance, we're fighting an uphill battle. Oh, let's not forget education reform.
BULL
CHINA
SHOP
That’s why the media and the Democrats keep saying Trump needs to stop tweeting. They don’t like the fact that he can just ignore them, and talk right past them to the American people!
AND then MLKIII came out and talked about Trump's wonderful idea of providing VOTER ID cards for all eligible voters!! I about fell off my chair when I heard that. I'm sure THAT didn't sit well with Democrat leaders, or MLKIII's fellow 'civil rights leaders' who have been screaming against Voter ID for years!
First time ever a President is running with the ball so damn fast the media can’t keep up with him.
