Good for her! She needs to be sure to take it with her every time. A monitor makes things so much better when performing. :-)

LEAVE IT TO ME!
MARILYN MONROE: MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY Norma Jean was gifted at playing the dumb blonde. Behind that facade, she had a will of iron and was willing to do what was necessary sexually to advance her career at 20th Century Fox. During her marriage to Joe DiMaggio and her time at the Actors Studio, she was a regular at Upper West Side parties attended by J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson.
One look at Edgars dour visage would convince anyone that the man never smiled. But on weekends, he and Clyde would book a roomette on the Pennsylvania Railroads Congressional to New York, hole up at the Waldorf, dress in tuxedos and attend parties where Cole Porter, before his accident, would sit down at the piano after dinner. Edgar was devilishly handsome in a tux, and he knew it.
Pour a glass of champagne or two into Edgar, and he was one of the great raconteurs of his era, which made him a beloved guest in New York high society. His impersonation of Franklin Roosevelt was so accurate that if you closed your eyes, you would swear the president was in the room with you.
In the Fifties, Edgar and Marilyn hit it off immediately. At parties they would go off in a corner and gossip like schoolgirls about who was doing what to whom.
When Marilyn became involved with Jack Kennedy, Edgar warned her, Kennedy men think of women as holes, starting with old Joe himself. But Marilyn was smitten, and Jack passed her on to Bobby and Teddy as a sex toy. Marilyn convinced herself that Jack would divorce Jackie, and she would soon become First Lady. Then she died. (Ill let it go at that.)
This 1960 clip is from Lets Make Love, not one of her best movies, where she was supported by Yves Montand and Tony Randall. The Lionel Newman jazz arrangement is typical late Fifties and gets in the way of her singing.

ELLA FITZGERALD: MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY This is early Ella from 1939. Her perfect diction provides a better insight into the lyrics, and she puts her own spin on the Yiddishness of the melody. Oscar Levant found it deliciously ironic that a WASP like Cole could write a quintessential Jewish tune.

My Dad was a great fan of old movies, and had connections with the “industry”. He had two 16mm projectors and ran them like a pro. We had family movie night every week in our living room, and had a screen that took up a whole wall. Here are some of the movies we enjoyed:
All the Nelson Eddy movies
The Great Race
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
All the Marilyn Monroe movies
2001 A Space Odyssey
Captains Courageous
Laurel and Hardey
Showboat
Dr. Strangelove
Lots of other musicals
He was also the guy who repaired training films for the SAC and the early Warning System, and, of course, had to run them to make sure the splices were good, so I was raised on B52, Nike Systems, and Distant Early Warning (DEW Line) training films. Second Grade “Show and Tell” was always a shocker when I would get up and talk about what I had learned over the weekend!

CHARLIE PARKER: MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY The list of sidemen alone on this recording is daunting. Bird took his shot at this song in 1954 and put his own brand on it.

Back in those days, there were no TCM, VCR, DVD, or anything else, so to see a Classic movie you were at the mercy of one TV Network who had a show “Saturday Night At The Movies”, which was heavily butchered, censored, and interrupted by commercials.
But at my house, it was different! It was the original “Home Theater” complete with Altec Lansing Voice-Of-The-Theater Monster stereo speakers.
“Singing in the Rain” was a BIG Favorite. Maybe that is why I took Debbie Reynold’s death so hard last month.

ROSEMARY CLOONEY: MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY Rosemarys glory years were the first half of the Fifties, but in the Eighties she came back and turned to the Great American Songbook. This is small jazz club arrangement.

JULIE LONDON: MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY This 1961 recording puts a different cast on the song. It travels somewhere between pop, jazz and Big Band.

THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO: MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY He spent much of his career as a sideman backing others, but in the Sixties he broke out and made a name for himself. He tickles the ivories like few others. This is a great jazz rendition.

Marilyn Monroe was much more complicated than I knew at the time.
The Kennedys were the death of her...probably literally!
