D.C. National Guard Chief Fired Days Before Trump Inauguration: "The Timing Is Extremely Unusual"

"

It doesn’t make sense to can the general in the middle of an active deployment," rages D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) after Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, who heads the D.C. National Guard and is an integral part of overseeing the inauguration, has been ordered removed from command effective Jan. 20, 12:01 p.m., just as Donald Trump is sworn in as president.

As The Washington Post reports, Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz’s departure will come in the midst of the presidential ceremony, classified as a national special security event — and while thousands of his troops are deployed to help protect the nation’s capital during an inauguration he has spent months helping to plan.

“The timing is extremely unusual,” Schwartz said in an interview Friday morning, confirming a memo announcing his ouster that was obtained by The Washington Post.

During the inauguration, Schwartz would command not only the members of the D.C. guard but also an additional 5,000 unarmed troops sent in from across the country to help. He also would oversee military air support protecting the nation’s capital during the inauguration.

“My troops will be on the street,” Schwartz, who turned 65 in October, said, “I’ll see them off but I won’t be able to welcome them back to the armory.” He said that he would “never plan to leave a mission in the middle of a battle.”

Schwartz, who was appointed to head the guard by President George W. Bush in 2008, maintained the position through President Obama’s two terms. He said his orders came from the Pentagon but that he doesn’t know who made the decision.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) blasted the decision to remove Schwartz, especially on Inauguration Day.

Well, since the Commanding Officer is a black man .. does anybody know if it was the Officer’s choice to be relieved as soon as Trump was sworn in .. since that act could make Trump his Superior ..??

So, it may not be Obama at all, but the fact that the gentleman does not want to serve under Trump .. and Obama was willing to accommodate him.

I’m hoping that’s all it is .. and that there is no EXTRA event being planned to take advantage of the Officer leaving at a peak moment in the event.

While there may be an “interim” person taking over .. I sincerely hope it will be someone who is aware of the possible danger because of the impending protests.

I think I’ll call my Congressman and see if he can shed some light on this - seeing as how he’s a member of the Military.

"Are you sure this guy is incapable of participating in a coup attempt? I would not be so fast to ask for him back. This happened for a reason."

"If" Obama caused the dismissal for purposes inimical to Trump, Trump can immediately reverse it. "If" Trump caused the dismissal, then he certainly has a replacement on tap and ready to go. In either case, Obama and his allies lose.

The D.C. NG commander is an appointee of the president, and his “tour of duty” ends when that president’s term ends.

They are trying to make a story out of nothing. The DC NG commander sends a resignation letter every election cycle. It is usually submitted 30 days prior so as to ensure a smooth transition. Bush appointed him, Obama returned his resignation letter and kept him on. Trump accepted his resignation.

When Trump accepted his resignation the Pentagon issues an order that officially relieves him from duty. The article is trying to make it sound he was ordered to resign. Play on words.

I could be wrong, but I swear the original story - which I thought I read in its entirety - made no mention of the letters of resignation or of the Trump transition team. The (Washington Post) story as it appears now has a time stamp sometime after I made my original comments, so it might have been modified.

This is, I think, why the original story caused so much confusion - it either left out key facts, or those facts were buried so deep in the story that a lot of people missed them.

The original story made it sound like the general's termination came out of the blue, and that he had no idea what was going on.

Thanks for the info. I thought the story was changed, but it was also possible I didn’t read all the way through the first version.
