D.C. National Guard Chief Fired Days Before Trump Inauguration: "The Timing Is Extremely Unusual"

"

It doesn’t make sense to can the general in the middle of an active deployment," rages D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) after Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, who heads the D.C. National Guard and is an integral part of overseeing the inauguration, has been ordered removed from command effective Jan. 20, 12:01 p.m., just as Donald Trump is sworn in as president.

As The Washington Post reports, Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz’s departure will come in the midst of the presidential ceremony, classified as a national special security event — and while thousands of his troops are deployed to help protect the nation’s capital during an inauguration he has spent months helping to plan.

“The timing is extremely unusual,” Schwartz said in an interview Friday morning, confirming a memo announcing his ouster that was obtained by The Washington Post.

During the inauguration, Schwartz would command not only the members of the D.C. guard but also an additional 5,000 unarmed troops sent in from across the country to help. He also would oversee military air support protecting the nation’s capital during the inauguration.

“My troops will be on the street,” Schwartz, who turned 65 in October, said, “I’ll see them off but I won’t be able to welcome them back to the armory.” He said that he would “never plan to leave a mission in the middle of a battle.”

Schwartz, who was appointed to head the guard by President George W. Bush in 2008, maintained the position through President Obama’s two terms. He said his orders came from the Pentagon but that he doesn’t know who made the decision.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) blasted the decision to remove Schwartz, especially on Inauguration Day.

"Trump chose to accept his resignation."

Where did you get that? In the original story from the WP (which is extensively quoted in this article), there is no mention of a voluntary resignation, simply that he was notified of his termination effective 1/2/02017.

The general is portrayed as being befuddled by the termination, which is not described as automatic or routine. Either the article is deliberately omitting key facts or . . . ?

Decapitate the D.C. Guard at the moment Trump is inaugurated to open the pathways for the protesters and annarchists.

The head of the National Guard in the District of Colombia is a presidential appointee.

He must be reappointed every four or eight years.

Trump has chosen not to reappoint him.

ZeroNutjob had it right. The timing is extremely unusual in that it only happens once every four or eight years.

This is sensationalist to the max.

It’s a nothing-burger.

"This termination could not come from PE Trump...He, even though elected, is STILL private citizen Trump...This order had to come from Obama admin...Another attempt to make Trump look bad and maybe cause more disturbances..."

That is my view, but on the other thread, lots of people were calling this a brilliant move by Trump, part of "draining the swamp."

Trump might be expecting to have to deploy the Guard to protect gov’t facilities, and wants someone he can trust.

Someone who’s already past retirement age doesn’t have a career to harm.

Consider the possibility that there is a coup in the works and Mattis knows this guy plays for the other team...

This is clearly an act of sabotage by Obama. Trump can reappoint him immediately.

It certainly looks that way, doesn't it.

I think you're right. His appointed term is expiring.

Not being re-appointed is not a firing.

For what it’s worth Dept.........

snip
From the Washington Post article

.....
As is customary, Schwartz, like other presidential appointees, submitted a letter of
resignation to give the new administration a clean start. He had done so before, but
the Obama administration twice declined to accept.

The Trump transition team made the decision to accept Schwartz’s resignation,
according to a military official with knowledge of the situation.

It’s the democrats questioning the move not republicans.

Something more is up.

We may never know.
If a coup there will be a million dead, starting with elite democrats, all of them.

Simple fix. Immediately upon taking the oath, he signs Trump Executive Order 001, reinstating the general effective 20 Jan 2017, 12:02. All fixed.

“Something more is up”

I agree.

When someone who commands troops in the capital city (especially troops from a city where Hillary got 95% of the vote) needs to be relieved in the first 30 seconds of the new Administration, you have to wonder.

This is very worrying. Hope Mattis is lining up loyal commanders right now.

Are you sure this guy is incapable of participating in a coup attempt? I would not be so fast to ask for him back. This happened for a reason.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that information was included in the original version of the WP article. (The date stamp on the current version of the WP article is AFTER I made my comments on the original story.) If that information was there in the original story, I missed it. Even now, it is buried at the bottom of the story.

I have no idea if it was included or not, but I do remember reading it as some point.
But like you it may have been an addition to the first published article.

The troops of the DC National Guard are drawn from the population of a city that gave Hillary Clinton 95% of the vote.

Having them on the streets and armed on January 20, commanded by a man who, to say the least, does not have the confidence of the Trump team, worries me greatly.

I hope that the U.S. Marine Corps takes over security at 12:01 pm next Friday.
