EU legislators today (12 January) called for a universal basic income to combat the looming risk of job loss by the onward march of robots, as well as concerns about European welfare systems.
Technological progress is no longer seen as safe path toward prosperity. A new generation of robots and the development of artificial intelligence may improve how we manufacture goods or how we spend our leisure time.
But this new wave of intelligent gadgets and autonomous robots could also destroy thousands of jobs without creating new ones in the same proportion, warned a non-legislative report adopted by the European Parliaments Legal Affairs Committee (JURI).
The development of robotics and AI has raised concerns about the future of employment, the viability of social welfare and security systems and, ultimately, is creating the potential for increased inequality in the distribution of wealth and influence.

One wonders if giving everyone a so-called ‘living wage’ while at the same time eliminating EVERY SINGLE WELFARE PROGRAM at the local, state, and federal level would be less of a burden on the taxpayer.......
How are you going to generate taxes to pay for this, then? Ain’t that a catch.
LMAO that’s perfect!
Well, when the European rulers have no other use for their peasants (or an excess of them) they, historically, like to fight them against each other in wars.
The new peasants they are importing love fighting even without their rulers' permission.
By taxing the robots.
(Not that I necessarily support that stance.)
Regards,
How do you generate taxes to pay for welfare? Would it take less ‘generation’ for this scheme than welfare? It’s just a question of the math. Money is being dispensed that hasn’t been earned in either scenario, which is the lesser burden to the taxpayer. And yes, the ideal is NO monies being utilized for either case but we know that situation is not going to occur....l
EVERY problem can be solved with a tax.
Well, it has been said that if you want less of something, tax it......
Where we’re going, there is no money...
Robots eventually take over every job until labor costs nothing.
Then once they start nanoprinting and mining in space, materials will be free too.
Real estate might be cramped until other planets are colonized.
But eventually even that will be irrelevant since you’ll be able to enjoy unlimited space, things and maybe even time with your buddies in the VR world.
Material things will mean nothing when everyone can have unlimited quantities of everything.
>> EVERY problem can be solved with a tax.
Up until the guillotine is finally used to solve the tax problem.
Sounds like Marx’s utopia.
That needs to be visible around every corner in the Louise Weiss Building in Strasbourg (the official seat of the European Parliament, compared to the Tower of Babel in appearance) and the cruciform Berlaymont Building in Brussels.
Well, it is also possible that elites can limit technology and keep others enslaved simply to have power.
It’s not enough for some people to have every *thing* they want. Some get their kicks from owning other humans...
Sounds like Orwell’s version of Marx’s utopia.
Forget the free cash and just institute a robot tax, you morons.
This will cause tremendous social disruptions as well.
