ITHACA, N.Y. -- In an unprecedented State of the City Address Wednesday night, Mayor Svante Myrick addressed President-Elect Donald Trump and his administration, calling it "openly hostile" and saying that the City of Ithaca will stand for the needs of its residents in the face of adversity....
"I believe the fight against fascism will be waged and be won at the local level," Myrick said. "We are the antidote to fascism. We are the antidote to the rage that encourages people to vote against anyone who seems just a bit different."
He said fascist governance works because it allows people to dehumanize those who are different from themselves. But focusing officials and residents on our their own communities and how Ithaca can become better tackles that problem head-on.
"...It is impossible to look into our neighbor's eyes and to see anything less than a human being," he said.

The real story here is that Ithaca is out of mirrors.
One should not destroy the entire body because of one diseased part.
Remember our history. Only 1/3 of the colonists fought for our independence and created the greatest nation on earth. The MAJORITY wanted to remain subjects of the crown. Our universities need cleaning our of certain progressive professors and presidents who are sell outs to Marxism-Communism and are poisoning the minds of our youth. Much of the blame starts in the home. Socialist factions had no effect on me because I was an entrenched and educated patriot when I went to college.
Opinions! Opinions! I happen to dislike Cornhole University!
Your childish name calling reflects a lack of education and maturity.
I graduated from Cornell in ‘68!
Class of ‘60. Loved every minute I was there.
Ithaca is a small city. VERY small, in land area and population (if you don’t include “temporary student residents)
It is surrounded by several small rural towns and villages that are NOT evil.
It’s influence in the state and country is nonexistent.
As a “place”, Ithaca (meaning the Ithaca area) is gorges (sic).
As the locally iconic slogan/bumper sticker says,”Ithaca is Gorges”
It IS absolutely “gorgeous”. A clean, picturesque, beautiful Cayuga Lake (40 miles long, 435 feet deep) surrounded by beautiful hills, streams, gorges, and forests. It’s a picture perfect post card location.
Another locally iconic slogan, T-shirts bumper stickers, is “Ithaca, NY, Centrally Isolated”
So true! Less so now than when I first moved here 35 years ago.
Geographically located centrally between major cities of Syracuse, Elmira, Binghamton, and Rochester.
Ithaca has no local affiliate to the major TV networks.
When I first moved here, Ithaca was truly “a one horse town”. The most common phrase you heard when trying to buy something was, “We can order it”.
In recent years we have gotten all the Big Box stores and restaurants. A good thing. We have all the amenities based on a population that doesn’t live here year round. Great for us locals. Also, the development of beautiful New York State Parks as vacation/tourist attractions.
The famous glen at Watkins Glen has nothing on us. Enfield Glen, with yes, Lucifer Falls, is a short walk for me through the woods, directly across the road from my house.
The gorge and falls at nearby Taughannock Falls is a short drive and easy hike to the one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rockies.
Yes, “politically” Ithaca is EVIL. The Cornell and I.C. connected people are EVIL/misguided. Liberal, Communist, LGBTQXYZ, views pollute the human environment of their own bubble.
It doesn’t affect me other than making me laugh at their derangement.
I’m not the least bit worried about them. I have GUNS they don’t.
You might want to talk to the people in the surrounding towns and counties who have had their conservative values attacked and subjugated by lefties moving out of Ithaca and into the “suburbs.” Trumansburg used to be a nice little village. Now it’s “mini-Ithaca.” A similar thing is happening to the Town of Covert (Seneca County) and the Town of Hector (Schuyler County). In fact, Tompkins County more or less can’t get a republican elected to any office higher than town board because of the Ithaca overflow. The City is a cancer on central New York.
