Honolulu’s Café 8 ½ gets rave reviews on Yelp for its “Radiatore Verde” and “Italian stir fry,” among other popular dishes at the eclectic mom-and-pop restaurant – but the response to its new 'policy' barring pro-Trump patrons has been decidedly more mixed.
A bright yellow, handmade sign posted on the restaurant's front glass door declares: “If you voted for Trump you cannot eat here! No Nazis.”
A photo of the sign was shared with FoxNews.com. One also is proudly posted on the café’s Facebook page, and was “liked” by some 40 people.
“…The next time you're in Honolulu, eat lunch here, not only are they on the right side of things, the food is delicious and reasonable,” one Facebook user wrote next to the photo.
Others aren’t so charmed.
Honolulu resident and Donald Trump voter Susan Roberts told FoxNews.com she found the sign in “extreme poor taste.”
“It's childish and very unprofessional,” she said in an email. “… The restaurant owner doesn't have to worry ... I will not be stepping foot in that establishment.”
Willes Lee, former chairman of the Hawaii Republican Party and now president of National Federation of Republican Assemblies, told FoxNews.com the sign is discriminatory, and harkens back to “racist and hate-filled” days before statehood.
“Remember when Filipinos couldn't go in certain places, or Japanese wouldn't be allowed [in] many homes? And, it didn't matter who they voted for,” said Lee, who is of Japanese descent.

Except that other businesses DO have to submit to tyranny of the government ... which these restaurant owners probably support.

Political speech is protected from political retaliation. The First Amendment applies only as a limit on the government, not private entities. Private entities can limit your speech on their property if they want. At the same time, they are not immune from other private individuals or entities taking them to task for it. But it's not illegal.

Political affiliation is not covered under any of the multitude of federal civil rights acts. Maybe in some states, or at the local level, it's illegal to discriminate based on political affiliation, but not at the federal level.

I don't trust Yelp anyway. There's no way to tell if the laudatory comments were placed by staff, friends and relatives or the low ratings pushed by competitors.
Do they want a 10% cut in business? Eateries run on thin margins you know.

No, they cannot, at least not political speech...the "sit-ins" at restaurants across the South decided that issue back in the 1960's. That was political "speech" on private property.
If we lived in a free country they would be entitled to do this as would the Oregon bakers be entitled to refuse service to whomever they choose. They then get to bear the consequences of their choice. I say this as a dyed in the wool deplorable.
Yes, it was. However, prior to the Civil Rights Act, it was legal for those businesses to throw those people out at that time. It was legal for bus lines to segregate, it was legal to have separate drinking fountains and entrances to buildings and to segregate by skin color. People were forcibly removed, and, as attitudes towards segregation changed, those businesses suffered public backlashes, but they were still within their rights at the time to remove those folks from their property.
It was after the Civil Rights Act that it became illegal.
The problem is, Civil Rights are granted by government. They can also be revoked by that same government.
I wonder if you were gay...and voted for Trump..would you have a case?
