‘Insane’: Anger in Mobile, Ala., as city robs park of beloved old cedar for Trump rally backdrop
Washington Post ^ | 12/20/16 | Samantha Schmidt

On the day leading up to the final rally of Donald Trump’s “thank you” tour, city officials in Mobile, Ala., raved about its plans for a festive, Christmas welcome for the president-elect. The mayor’s chief of staff tweeted that the city “did the impossible,” erecting and decorating a 50-foot Christmas tree as a backdrop for Trump’s speech.

But some Mobile residents soon speculated that the majestic cedar tree was one they had seen before, AL.com reported. Just over a mile away from the stadium where Trump would speak, in a public park, a massive cedar tree was gone.

As skeptical residents raised questions with the mayor, city officials confirmed that, indeed, the tree had been removed from Public Safety Memorial Park and taken to Ladd-Peebles Stadium. In emails and across social media, residents erupted in outrage.

“Our city parks aren’t Christmas tree farms,” one woman said she wrote in an email to Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “An old growth tree from a city park for backdrop? Insane.”

“If in fact the city did that.....it was wrong.”

Why? And what gives you the moral or political authority to decide what’s right or wrong for the citizens of Mobile, AL?

Cedar trees grow like weeds in the deep South. No way on earth this tree was even all that old. This is more FAKE NEWS, people!

This story doesn't make sense on any level:

1. Why would city officials cut down a "beloved" tree from a city park when many other trees would likely have been available?

2. The tree is described as "50 feet" tall, which - where I come from - is relatively small for a "majestic" cedar. I had a cedar in my yard that was probably 90-100 feet tall before I had it cut down for safety reasons. There are dozens of trees well over 50 feet within a half a mile of my house. It is hard to imagine a single 50 foot cedar as being a local landmark.

3. I don't know what the definition of "old growth" is, but some cedars can grow 50 feet in 20 or 25 years.

But should be a local story at most. No one else gives a Shiite.

Yes, it was a tree.

And apparently it was on Public property....

Should not there have been some discussion..about chopping down a tree...on Public property to do anything with?

Maybe we don't have full disclosure here..And I'd guess that is correct.

Apparently....and I will suggest I am wrong, until I know different......

But the city "fathers" decided themselves to cut the tree down..And the citizens had nothing to say about it?

I might be wrong.........

You can tell me...if I am.

Possibly the answer is no, which is usually how a Representative government works, you elected people that can decide to cut down one tree from the many that are in a public park.

LOL! I saw the “:majestic” tree at the rally. I thought it was part of an over sized “shrubbery” that was part of the stadium and had a few decorations on it. One of the speakers mentioned the “giant” Christmas tree and I believe the whole point was that Trump made the statement that we will be saying Merry Christmas again. The Black pastor who did the initial invocation also made sure to not only inject Jesus into his prayer, but got the crowd involved and the word “Jesus” rang out many times from about 30,000 mouths. Almost as moving as a Promise Keepers get together and hearing thousands of men singing and praising God/Jesus...

It’s a good thing for the author that we are all stupid enough to believe that a for-profit company which cuts down thousands if not millions of trees every year for the print edition of its paper can somehow be on the moral high ground when it criticizes this one (1) tree being cut down.

Yes, the mayor acted stupidly. Didn’t the city arborist have any say in the matter?

HELL NO! Anyone who wants to exhibit "outrage" over a perishable aesthetic, or value in "old growth" anything, is someone deserving of nothing but contempt.

That there may be a multiplicity of such fools in any particular locality, and those willing to sympathize with their flapdoodle, is no mitigator.

Changes the story...
