A New York man’s legal defense for murdering a UPS driver is apparently to claim he thought he was brutally killing president-elect Donald Trump instead.
Justin Barkley, a 38-year-old Ithaca man, is charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of William Schumacher in a Wal-Mart parking lot Dec. 8.
But during Barkley’s arraignment hearing Monday, during which he attempted to enter a guilty plea, Barkley says the person he killed was Trump, not Schumacher.
“I shot and killed Donald Trump purposely, intentionally and very proudly,” Barkley said at the hearing....When asked whether he could be convinced otherwise, Barkley replied “I hope not.”
The judge refused Barkley’s guilty plea and ordered him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he is fit to stand trial. If he does stand trial and is convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

I knew the deceased and much of his family when I livedin Candor, NY...my old chirch Allen Memorial Baptist had a prayer service for the family. So I can vouch that this person was real and that this wasn’t a “FAKE NEWS” story...(may the main stream media be damned!)
Look, this guy was of course “out of his mind”, in an alternate state of reality, to kill a total stranger thinking that Donald Trump would be driving a UPS semi, after midnight, in a Walmart parking lot, in ITHACA, NY of all places.
WHY would a “rational” person do and/or believe such a thing?
Not making any excuse for this guy. They can throw him over Taughannock Falls, drop him to the bottom of Cayuga Lake (435 ft.), Throw him off the Stewart Avenue bridge or the roof of one of the Ithaca College towers.
Just for info, the guy’s previous employment was as a social worker in a psychiatric hospital, and as a govt employee for child services.
I wouldn’t bet much that the guy isn’t going for the insanity plea, or that he is totally nuts, and has been for years. Insanity would pretty much go unnoticed at a child services office.

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca man Justin Barkley was found not competent to stand trial Thursday morning for allegedly murdering a Candor man in a Wal-mart parking lot in December because he thought the man was president-elect Donald Trump.Barkley, 38, is charged with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting and running over William Schumacher on Dec. 8. He's also charged with menacing a police officer or peace officer after shooting at two police officers and ensuing a nearly eight-hour standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies before surrendering.
(Judge John) Rowley held that Barkley should be submitted to psychiatric facility for further evaluation.
While there is no hard and fast rule about how long Barkley will be submitted to a psychiatric evaluation, (District Attorney Matt) Van Houten said he expects the process to take a few months. Afterward, mental health professionals could decide if he's competent for trial or if he will continue to be held, possibly indefinitely.

Ironic - I just finished replying to a long email to an old high school friend in Ithaca who has a husband in Assisted Living and mine here at home with a broken shoulder so we were commiserating with one another - AND BOTH of us ready to hang it up for the night.
