Russian President Vladimir Putin joins a host of world leaders who have had to respond to brazen terror attacks on Monday. One of those attacks happened in Ankara, Turkey, where Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov was killed in cold blood by a police officer who was standing behind him during a speech in an art gallery. After he shot Karlov several times in the back, the killer screamed that he did it for Aleppo. The entire attack was caught on camera.
Putin has vowed revenge.
"A crime has been committed and it was without doubt a provocation aimed at spoiling the normalization of Russo-Turkish relations and spoiling the Syrian peace process which is being actively pushed by Russia, Turkey, Iran and others," said a stern-faced Putin."There can only be one response - stepping up the fight against terrorism. The bandits will feel this happening."
Monday's other tragedies occurred in Berlin, Germany, where a truck driver plowed into a crowd in a Christmas market, murdering 12 people and injuring nearly 50 others. German Chancellor Angela Merkel defined it as a terror attack. The killer may still be at large.
In Zurich, Switzerland - again on the same day - a gunman injured several people near an Islamic center.
Sounds like he is saying things are about to get much hotter in Syria.
I can’t disagree with him.
Ya think? The instant that hit the news I could have called that one even without him saying it. If they thought things were bad up to now, . . . .
Things may get pretty hot in Turkey as well. Putin in particular, and the Russians in general, don’t usually resort to diplomatic pressure when someone hurts them.
Muslims killed those people with the truck and the ambassador
Islam is the cause of all this evil
The only sane way to deal with war is disproportionate response.
“Half ass” and “quagmire” go hand in hand.
Go Get ‘Em.
I was listening to a lengthy story on Syria on NPR by a Boston affiliate last night. They were appalled at how the world doesn’t seem to care about the brutality going on. Interestingly, when people called in, the consensus seemed to be along the lines of “not our circus. Not our monkeys.”
A few of them pointed out that Assad is fighting Islam and more power to him.
I’ve always thought the phrase “moderate rebals” is an oxymoron. Moderates don’t rebel.
I think you’ve touched on why a lot of conservative americans have an odd respect for Putin. At least he seems to go in to win. We have not had that since they pulled Saddam out of that hole. And even that victory was thrown away.
I agree. I think sniper teams are going out in force.
\Plausible deniability while decimating their enemies.
And based on Trump’s response so far, it will all be good. When someone literally practices genocide, they have little room to complain when it is practiced against them.
Tourists and police were targeted at Jordanian antiquities sites
Guess one dead Canadian woman is not newsworthy
I’m sure he and Trump have already communicated on this. Once Trump is sworn in, I expect things to go down pretty quickly.
Start leveling major gathering sites on Friday.
To effect a ceasefire, they allowed the worst of the worst militants to evacuate from east Aleppo to Idlib
Most figured this would allow easy escape into Turkey
Maybe Erdogan and Putin need to turn that place into a holding pen and get busy
Didn’t Turkey shoot down a Russian plane recently also?
You’re forgetting the Russian plane that the Turks shot down at the border of Turkey within say the last 6 months...They settled that quietly and diplomatically without interference from the US.
I wonder if the assassin’s family is in protective custody? If not the may be in for a world of hurt.
