NEIL DIAMOND: “IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT”

Neil went all the way back to the Brill Building gang. In 1998 he recorded a disk of songs from movies that was produced by Bob Gaudio of the 4 Seasons. Elmer Bernstein handled the orchestration. He gives it a good turn.

In 2005 Carly took on the Great American Songbook, and this entry is simply beautiful. Her voice has darkened over the years, and it’s just the right approach for this song.

We’ll wrap with an unconventional but beautiful, emotional arrangement.

For all its failures, 2004's bio-pic “De-Lovely” had its beautiful moments. In the final scene, Kevin Kline, as Cole, staggers to the piano and plays this song in D-flat. An accomplished musician, Kevin did his own piano work, and in Cole’s old broken voice he whispers the lyrics to some of the most beautiful chords in existence. The scene begins in the afterlife but ends in Cole’s and Linda’s glory years together. Your screen will go blurry as it finishes.

We’ll be doing classical Christmas music next week, Classic Rock for New Years, and then we’ll return to the Great American Songbook after the holidays.
