Polar vortex returns: Here’s where it’ll be coldest
CBS News ^ | Dec. 13, 2016 | CBS News

Extreme cold is moving across more of the country this week, bringing with it the potential for record lows and dangerous conditions for children, pets and anyone else without adequate protection — all thanks to a weather phenomenon known as the polar vortex.

What is the polar vortex?

This phrase is once again in the headlines, and worth re-defining. The “polar vortex” technically refers to a large area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds both of the Earth’s poles, according to the National Weather Service. It’s always existed at the poles, but the polar vortex strengthens in particular during the winter and can send cold air southward.

Temperatures dip to dangerous lows when the polar vortex expands, sending thermometers plummeting.

I live in south Texas (Alice, Texas)and remember walking to school back in the 50’s and early 60’s in the winter and having fun breaking ice in the gutters of the street along the way. We even had some snow back then. Every winter it was as cold as it could be. We expected it since it was WINTER and winter was supposed to be cold.

Now, look! Climate is going back to what it was and the timid and weak-minded, environmentally indoctrinated sissies programmed by our climate change fanatics ARE PANIC STRUCK because weather is going to be what it was back then. However, it is now the fault of “man”...not nature.

Can anyone recommend a nice town in Arizona or Texas?

Don't bother with North Texas, at least this weekend. We're supposed to have a 40 to 50 degreee drop in the next few days.

May you fall through the ice.

Polar Vortex or not, I will be on St Pete Beach Saturday with my best friend. Every Saturday all year long, for many many years my best friend and I hit the beach, throw some Frisbee, enjoy the people and the weather, then retire to our favorite beach bar, the Toasted Monkey. We might even get up and sing a song or two with the rock band, The Torpedoes. Been doing this since 1974 when we left Flint and moved to Tampa Bay.

Don’t you understand that it’s global warming that causes these polar vortexes that freeze stuff solid then returns later in the year to melt all that; rinse, repeat.

We are supposed to get up to the high teens next week. Whooohooo - Heat Wave! LOL

Seriously, I am trying to get out of here and to our winter house in CA. They may be liberal crazies but at least I don’t have to hibernate like a bear until Easter.
