DEC 9 2016 Is Trump Softening on Young Immigrants? Senators Hope So, Offer Bill by SUZANNE GAMBOA
WASHINGTON - Seizing on President-elect Donald Trump's "encouraging" comments in a Time interview, two U.S. senators are pushing for a stopgap protection from deportation for young immigrants who arrived or stayed in the country illegally as children.
Senate Minority Leader Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., partnered to introduce legislation Friday that would protect the young immigrants should Trump repeal the executive action before Congress takes up immigration reform. The protection would be temporary to keep them from being deported while Congress decides what it wants to do on immigration
Since this congressional session is winding down, with the House gone for the year and the Senate staying to wrangle over a spending bill, not much is likely to happen this year.
Durbin said the bill, dubbed the BRIDGE Act, will be re-introduced when Congress convenes next year. Sens. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., are the cosponsors on the bill so far.
Some 744,000 young immigrants are working and and are protected from deportation through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. President Barack Obama created the program in 2012 through executive action. But during the campaign Trump said it was one of the actions he'd repeal.
Many young immigrants with DACA have been fearful of what that would mean for them since they turned over their identity information to the government for the DACA protection.
But Durbin said Friday he's encouraged by Trump's recent comments to Time magazine, which named him Person of the Year, that "we are going to work something out" for DREAMers.
"We want to reach out to the incoming administration and urge them if they take any action on DACA try to...................................

Has Linda switched parties yet?
Trump should not allow this to gather steam and send word through Priebus that such a proposal is DOA.
“”we are going to work something out” for DREAMers.”
TRANSLATION: What’s the efficient way of kicking them out?
So what else is new?
DACA was an illegal action by Obama and should be repealed.
We must not let emotional arguments steer us into a blunder of legalizing ANY illegal aliens.
The parents who brought them here are responsible, let them take them home with them.
If we foolishly accommodate the so-called Dreamers it will be impossible to deport the parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.
Don’t split up families, make them all go home and apply like REAL immigrants.
Probably already done last week.
Punkin Chunkin Trebuchets ?
The rest of the Gang will be joining him shortly, McCain, Rubio and Flake.
Hoeven, Heller, Corker, Alexander, Hatch, Murkowsky also voted for the Gang of Eight treason.
You raise an excellent point. The notion of chain migration. Also, don’t forget that 40% of illegals are visa overstayers. These include those who come on a student visa, complete their studies and do go back and H1-B visas. We currently have a large cottage industry of lawyers and immigration activists coupled with sanctuary cities to stymie any real effort at deportation. Unless Trump’s base speaks up this train will gather steam.
I suspect Trump is soft-pedaling a lot of things between now and January 20th, because he knows that half the country is desperate to sabotage his win.
media attempting to drive a narrative again.
THIS was one of my rare “single issue” elections: Immigration, for what I see as one of the greatest threats this country has ever faced. For which left unstopped will rot America further just as Rome fell and Europe is on its way. The Supreme Court was a close second. These usual suspects of retard Democrats and RINOs never give up. I can only hope that President Trump sticks to his guns: build the wall;kick the “dreamers” out and nominate justices as conservative, if not more than so, than Scalia.
Not caving in to the illegal alien treason lobby is just the bare minimum that Trump needs to do.
If he is going to stop our homeland from sliding into third world status, he must toss the entire 1965 Immigration act into the dustbin.
No more endless LEGAL chain migration from the third world into our homeland. No more merging our society with the failed societies of Mexico, Central America, Africa, etc.
Mexifornia voted 2 to 1 against Trump. Other former American states now infected with hard left Latino voters, like CO, NV, and NM similarly voted to keep destroying our homeland
The immigration thing was my #1 reason for backing Trump.
I hope that he honors his promises.
.
So true. Deporting illegals does not split up families. The whole family can return to their home countries. They can take their US born kids with them.
Which brings up the matter of a needed Constitutional change so we stop giving citizenship to the spawn of illegal invaders.
H2B visa is already gone.
“No more endless LEGAL chain migration from the third world into our homeland.”
I agree————and the endless catering to all sorts of non English speakers is insane.
When previous generations arrived they provided their own interpreters until they learned English. In the Medicare booklet I just received there are instructions in FOURTEEN languages. Madness.
