The refrain is heard almost as often as the fatal gunshots: The way to reduce Chicago’s gun violence is tougher prison sentences for repeat gun offenders, keeping them off the streets and decreasing the city’s mounting death toll.
That idea, pushed by the mayor, police superintendent and others, shifts pressure from patrol officers of the city’s West and South sides to the Capitol, where legislators will consider how to balance law and order with finding alternatives to imprisoning young blacks and other minorities.
In that building, in the same Senate seat where Barack Obama launched his political career and focused on racial profiling issues, Democrat Kwame Raoul plans to propose legislation next month to impose longer sentences for defendants who previously committed a gun-related crime. …

Well, that sounds pretty close to the NRA's remedy of harsh longer sentencing for those that commit gun crimes.

Here’s the problem. The minute you jail these thugs, the same “community activists” show up demanding they be released because prisons are “racist” and that they are just victims of the system, blah blah.
You can’t buy into the BLM blather and also want safer streets. At some point, their interests will inevitably collide.

For a while there were some Federal grants to allow a county’s locally based state Prosecutor to act as a Deputy US Attorney who could prosecute gun crimes Federally.
The street thugs HATED that because Federal gun Crime sentences are really harsh compared to state sentences and the sentences were long enough that it became not worth committing the crime to do the time. Word got out quick in the street punk thug This was done in Ingham County,Michigan. It worked
What good does it do to increase sentencing if you then release them?
The correct solution is to vigorously prosecute all minor crimes and seek maximum sentences. Criminals commit crimes. Why pass up opportunities to get them off the streets?
So the IL legislature is tasked with solving Chicago gun crime by imprisoning young blacks and other minorities AND not imprisoning young blacks and other minorities at the same time? Nice idea if they can do it! Or is the idea that when they can't, Chicago's mayor can say, "Not MY Fault"?
There is already a crisis in those communities thanks to welfare-induced “abolition of the family” (a communistic tenet). It cannot end well.
