Jurors in Downtown L.A. heard opening statements Wednesday in the corruption trial of former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca.
Federal prosecutor Brandon Fox began by telling jurors Baca abused his power and tried to sweep misconduct under the rug while serving as Sheriff.
"Mr. Baca was the heartbeat of this conspiracy, the leader of this conspiracy, he was the driving force behind it," Fox said during a 40 minute presentation.
Baca faces charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice in the first of two trials.
He's accused of masterminding a scheme in 2011 to try to stop a federal grand jury investigation of inmate abuse and corruption, first by hiding an inmate who was acting as an FBI informant, then b

oh now his lawyers and him are trying to tell us he suffers from Alzheimers. First it was just during his first trial...then the lawyers say he has been suffering for years and it hurt his ability to make decisions back when he was Sheri.
