'The man with the bushy moustache' - America needs John Bolton as secretary of state
Washington Times ^ | Nov.29, 2016 | Suzanne Scholte

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

President-elect Donald Trump would be best served by selecting a secretary of State who understands the national security challenges our country faces, can literally “hit the ground running,” has a proven track record of successful negotiations, and most importantly, not only protects but projects the greatest attributes about America’s ideals of freedom and democracy. Remember that President Obama spent the first part of his administration on an apology tour. His disdain for American leadership in the world was communicated aboard and broadly.

Well, we’re not going to have Gary Johnson. He has to be tough enough to stand up to foreign leaders and the bureaucracy

Guiliani and Bolton are my only choices. Petreaus has baggage and it would be hard to justify giving him a top secret clearance......

He's a big-government globalist who has signed on to every stupid military campaign this country has undertaken in the last 25 years. The foreign/military policies he has supported have bankrupted this country and cost thousands of American lives.

I have legitimate questions about who has been paying his salary during the gaps in his public-sector resume, too. Trump has made a big deal about requiring prospective cabinet members to sign an agreement that would prohibit them from working as lobbyists for five years after they leave their posts. He should do the same thing and disqualify anyone who has worked as a lobbyist for the LAST five years, too.

I’d rather have Bolton than Romney, but I’d rather have somebody else.
We need to stop believing we can export American style democracy to third world backwaters who have no idea what the rule of law is.
Regime change has been an utter disaster.

As much as I like him Bolton wasn't exactly on the Trump side until after Trump won.

At least with #nevertrump Romney he would bring some supporters along...not so with Bolton.

Patreus(sp?) had some destruction of email issues along with Hillary too.

I agree. But every time I trot his name out around other sites everyone trashes him.
He’s exactly who we need, he don’t take caca from anyone AND he will look out for the US at a negotiation table.

Regime change has been an utter disaster.

Just think about what you've said here. A prospective candidate for Secretary of State in the Trump administration has spent most of his career pushing a foreign policy agenda for the U.S. that you openly describe as an "utter disaster."

Mitt Romney has no track record in foreign affairs whatsoever ... which means he's already a vast improvement over this guy.

Patrick Buchanan or a like-minded individual over a neocon any day.

BOL! Condi was initially good, but petered out.

A double entendre there?

Thing is, in today’s world, you are unlikely to get a candidate/cabinet member who is going to pass muster on everything you would like. And they probably won’t be 100% consistent.

If Trump does right, his appointee takes his marching orders from Trump, he doesn’t make them up himself.

Me too. For me, Petraeus is a “Oh hell no!” choice - another potential SecState with a piss-poor security history; Giuliani might have been loyal in his support of Trump from the get-go, but he is and always has been a “What’s good for Rudy” kind of guy; and, as for Romney, don’t trust him as far as I can throw him.

That would be a great improvement.

If Trump puts someone like Bolton into a key position like this, we'll have reached the point where we can legitimately question whether Trump's cabinet is any different than what Jeb Bush would have brought to the table.

I'm not asking for a perfect candidate. I wouldn't have supported Trump if that was the case.

I'm asking for a candidate who doesn't show up for his job interview with more baggage than I would find remotely acceptable.

You are incredibly myopic on this one.

Bolton was a stellar individual at the U.N., favoring Israel and the U.S. at every opportunity.

You won’t find a more di-hard U.S. representative.

Tell us what your killer issue is, and don’t just toss globalist at us.

I want an example of it. What some folks reference as globalist isn’t.

I can understand that. He doesn’t fit my bill on a number of things either, but I can endorse him if he inhabits the confines of the job.

I understand the viewpoint you have, but I have found in today’s day and age we seem to throw out the baby with the bathwater, almost to the point the people who CAN serve and WANT to serve are people I can’t stomach.

Kind of along the lines of “I won’t trust a man who doesn’t drink, smoke, or enjoy women”.

See Post #24.

I had this guy pegged as a bought and paid-for hack all the way back in 1998 when he and his PNAC partners began clamoring for the Clinton administration to topple the Milosevic regime in Serbia in support of the radical Islamic separatists in Kosovo.

Bolton is a Goldwater Reaganite. Check the history.
