India Supreme Court orders all movie theaters to play national anthem

Movie theaters across India must play the national anthem before every film, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.

The anthem -- "Jana Gana Mana" -- will be accompanied by an image of the Indian flag.

"All present in the (cinema) hall are obliged to stand up to show respect to the national anthem," Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy wrote.

The ruling is in response to a petition filed by Narayan Chouksey, a retired engineer in Bhopal, who asked the court to "specify what would be constituting disrespect and abuse of the national anthem."

...

While the national anthem is already played before movies by some theaters, and many Indians grew up listening to the song before most school and society events, it has never before been the law except in the western state of Maharashtra.

"The citizens of the country must realize that they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to (the) national anthem," the justices said.

Ministry of Home Affairs regulations already stipulate that Indians must stand to attention "whenever the anthem is sung or played."

In the past there have been reports of people being thrown out of venues or attacked for not showing respect to the anthem.

However, many Indians have also criticized a recent trend toward aggressive displays of patriotism amid a rise in jingoism on television news and in the press.

You mean back when respect and honor meant something? When people had respect for the military and the flag? When we had military parades? When most people went to church or synagogue? When people kissed the ground at Ellis Island when they got off the ships? When being on welfare was a disgrace? When you could leave your car or house unlocked and nothing happened? When your kids could walk several blocks to school and you didn’t have to worry about some pervert? When people in a neighborhood looked out for trouble makers and took care of problems on their own? When we didn’t have to worry about crackpot judges trying to reshape society along their own model?

I ALSO grew up doing this. My father enlisted in 1939 and remained in service until 1964. He did ‘Sicily’, on a troop ship getting torpedoed and was in the battle of Rome and was occupation in Germany at the end and after the war. My entire family was intimately familiar with base/post theaters and the practice.

My sister was born in Germany when my mother came to be with him. I myself did 8 years (1968-1976) nearly 7 were overseas.

You have to think about what your country is about. It shouldn’t be about mandating any behavior - and that includes adherence to things like this. It is EARNED and valued by those who realize what that value really is.

Fascism is direct oppressive regulation of a free society to impose political will. You might blithely shuck if off as my being against patriotism or the like, but I surely don’t. You should be ashamed of adding a “didn’t think FR would be....”

Same with me at Army posts. When they retired the flag for the evening with playing of taps, if we were riding bikes or driving cars you were expected to get off your bike, stop your car, get out and face the direction of the garrison flag.

I don’t see a problem with lining I-5 with garrison flags in LA and instituting the practice there ... or they can get off their fat *** and stand or at least keep quiet for the flag and anthem that represent the sacrifices of those who shed their blood so Americans could pick spuds out of their teeth following one of Hollyweird’s re-makes.

It wasn’t fascist-forced; it was accepted willingly.

Why yes I do, many times. Tell my why (or if) any of that was government-mandated.

(theologically, this is an acquired merit, acquired from having embraced God)

Yet I don’t recall where God mandates that his will be summarily imposed on others as Islam, for example, does.

I’m not saying this wouldn’t be just or patriotic here in this country, but it shouldn’t be mandated by the government as India is apparently doing in this case.

Exactly so. The Jehovah of the Jewish and Christian scriptures wants voluntary acceptance. He’ll warn you about the hot place if necessary, but if you actually care about it that means you aren’t lost yet. (As C. S. Lewis put it, in hell there may be a “black pleasure.”)

The story is about the Indian Government mandating this. Did you forget this? I didn’t. And that is what my comments were about. Not feelings of the heart or allegiance or any of that sort. And not one of you people here who carp and moan about what I said can show me where I don’t have any different say in the matter than you.

Maybe not, but each and every radio and TV station had to--and still does--meet whatever dumbass mandates were foisted on them by the FCC.

We complain about media bias. Consider who the media has to report to.

I can’t even remember the last time I saw a TV sign off flag and anthem followed by the usual pattern.

Regardless, FCC having control over some segment of electronic media is not the same thing as mandating the playing of anthems or otherwise preceding showing of a local venue performance.

I most certainly don’t agree with any FCC content-regulating authority. Most free people don’t. But tolerating government control of free enterprise isn’t the way to do it (thought fascism).

The movie theater I went to in the 50’s always displayed a flag on the screen, while the anthem played, and we all stood for the last showing nightly in the movie house. We were better then.

The actions of the left have stripped me of any give-a-crap about anyone thinking I should be ashamed of anything.

And to think less of anyone who pulls that one on me.

Not the only country to do this.

By law every Mexican broadcaster must carry a one-hour official government program, The National Hour, as a condition of holding a broadcast license.

We still have to live before God and His immutable principles. Voluntarily choose what is right, or go to hell through one of its innumerable doors.

I am saved by the Grace of God through faith in His Word.

Anything a human has to say to the contrary is dismissed.
