Movie theaters across India must play the national anthem before every film, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.
The anthem -- "Jana Gana Mana" -- will be accompanied by an image of the Indian flag.
"All present in the (cinema) hall are obliged to stand up to show respect to the national anthem," Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy wrote.
The ruling is in response to a petition filed by Narayan Chouksey, a retired engineer in Bhopal, who asked the court to "specify what would be constituting disrespect and abuse of the national anthem."

While the national anthem is already played before movies by some theaters, and many Indians grew up listening to the song before most school and society events, it has never before been the law except in the western state of Maharashtra.
"The citizens of the country must realize that they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to (the) national anthem," the justices said.
Ministry of Home Affairs regulations already stipulate that Indians must stand to attention "whenever the anthem is sung or played."
In the past there have been reports of people being thrown out of venues or attacked for not showing respect to the anthem.
However, many Indians have also criticized a recent trend toward aggressive displays of patriotism amid a rise in jingoism on television news and in the press.

An example of fascism.
Nice to see that we don’t have the world’s only activist courts.
Boy, I haven’t listened to that album in a thousand years (shows how old I am, lol). Always loved it. Will have to listen now, as you have triggered me to do so. Thanks,... I think.
I think it takes an old-fashioned liberal democratic republic like the USA to do nationalism without going overboard.
That used to be done in American Theaters and Play - Houses. Sadly not anymore,...
I grew up doing this.
Of course, I grew up in an Air Force family, and went to the base theaters.
Mandating it by law is a little off-putting, but merely expanding the custom at sporting events into other venues does not strike me as particularly problematic.
Of course, that makes me a fascist...in some quarters. Didn’t think those quarters could possibly include FR.
As a voluntary thing... great. Don’t even need to be enforcing respect for it... the moviegoers can keep on getting their popcorn, etc. But it would become like a prelude to the show.
I don’t recall hearing the Star Spangled Banner at the old Bill Chickering...
This is a common custom for me. We lived in two other countries that started the public gatherings with the national anthem.
GOOD FOR THEM and NO, its NOT Fascism, its SELF-RESPECT and HONOR, something we apparently lost during the nutty hippy days of the 1960s forward.
Now control yourselves. She ain’t your wife... yet.
“love your country” = “rise of jingoism”
God, I HATE CNN!!!!
I don’t agree... I believe honor has to be voluntary in order to really mean anything. If it gets to be even like, oh what would my neighbors think about me... forget about it. What honorability and honor there is in the world is invested in it by God.
In Thailand you have to stand up and watch a short on the King.
If there’s anything that would deserve jingoism, the Muslim assaults and insurrections on India would.
Otherwise India is about as peaceful in the world as Gandhi.
