CNBC ^ | November 23, 2016 | Robert Ferris

The Donald Trump-led Republican sweep is nothing short of a game changer for the beleaguered private prison contractor industry.

Prison contractors GEO Group and CoreCivic (formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America) struggled throughout 2016 as federal agencies began showing signs of ending the private management of public correction and detention facilities.

CoreCivic shares are up 57 percent since the election, and GEO shares are up almost 35 percent.

Private prisons are not a good thing. I have nothing against privatizing parts of the prison but no prison should be run by a contractor.

Other than wanting Hillary in one, is there anything good or bad about private prisons?

They tend to be cheaper for some states. For instance, CT can send prisoners to a private jail in AL.

This is not something to be happy about. Some things should never be privatized. I don’t want Amazon police officers pulling me over because they have the contract to patrol a certain stretch of highway.

You have a corporation who’s profit depends on new arrivals, and keeping the existing prisoners as long as possible.
They immediately lobby legislature and other creatures to arrest and incarcerate as many people as they can.

ala RoboCop?

That isn’t the way prisons are setup. The FACILITY and its management is privately owned. The operational prison-facing staff are Peace Officers.

It’s a bad idea.

Private prison corporations pay lobbyists to pay politicians to enact laws that will send more people to prison so that everyone, except for the guy sent to prison, and the tax payer, can make a profit.

That makes it is the prison corporation’s best interest to lobby for legislation that creates more laws to sent more people to prison.

I tend to agree. The free market pushes profits. This is wonderful for a lot of things, not so wonderful for this. There have been judge scandals over this kind of thing.

Something like this should be financed conventionally by a state that has as few incentives as possible to be anything but impartial.

Giving the state the power to take freedom away is a necessary evil. Giving that power to citizens to lord over their fellow Americans is a bridge too far. Imho. Just say no to private prisons.

Only if it results in additional facilities that are awarded to the vendor. Overcrowded facilities are worse on the prison vendors than the State.

I am not a shill for the Prison industry. I just think outsourcing is by and large a good idea.

Remember, the contractor does the math to figure out whether it makes sense to open another site. They would do that on appropriately zoned private land, not on state property, in most cases.

It makes sense from the viewpoint of integrity and responsibility (who is sued if something goes wrong, BOTH the vendor AND the state?) to keep all this business under supervision of the state, even if that costs more.

The problem is not overcrowding, the problem may be over-legislation and too many laws.

I agree they have failed and are flat out dangerous... The assumption republicans will expand them is an assumption at this point nothing more.

I will fight any expansion of them as heartily as I fought for Trumps election.

We recently had a corruption case in NE PA where private juvenile prisons were paying off a judge to send kids to prison for minor offenses. Disgusting.

The idea of for-profit prisons doesn’t make sense to me. Profits are a natural incentive to produce more of something. We don’t want to produce more inmates.
