Q+A
Q: What are 5 things we might not know about you?
Im a grandmother! My husband (Dick) and I have four children and five grandchildren.
I was born and raised in Michigan. Born in Holland, MI, Ive been a lifelong resident of Michigan.
Im an advocate for children. Ive been involved with education issues for 28 years. Ive been on the front lines fighting to make education better for all children.
Im an activist. Im a total outsider to elective office and government, but Im no stranger to the political process. A citizen volunteer, I have served in local, state, and national offices.
Im an entrepreneur. I have started new and innovative companies that help make our community better.
Q: Theres been a lot of talk about Common Core. Can you provide some straight talk on this topic?
Certainly. I am not a supporterperiod.
I do support high standards, strong accountability, and local control. When Governors such as John Engler, Mike Huckabee, and Mike Pence were driving the conversation on voluntary high standards driven by local voices, it all made sense.
Have organizations that I have been a part of supported Common Core? Of course. But thats not my position. Sometimes its not just students who need to do their homework.
However, along the way, it got turned into a federalized boondoggle.
Above all, I believe every child, no matter their zip code or their parents jobs, deserves access to a quality education.
Q: What are your thoughts about specific education policies?
I am very excited to get to work and to talk about my thoughts and ideas on making American education great again. The status quo is not acceptable. I am committed to transforming our education system into the best in the world.

“The status quo is not acceptable.” ~ Amen...
from an article in Newsweak two years ago that starts: "Jeb Bush has long advocated for all 50 states to adopt Common Core national standards. Now that the former Florida governor has all but confirmed his plans to run for president in 2016, the issue threatens to overshadow his likely campaign."
I do hope she opens up Education to CHOICE, COMPETITION and breaks the power of bureaus..
Great news!!!!!!

"Activist! Advocate! Fighter! Involved! Political process!"
All I want to hear is "Trump hired me to put this department out of business.
They were sure wrong about that one. Jeb wasn't in the race long enough for it to become an issue.
The rank and file of the Republican base saw through Jebby before it became an issue, and all that resulted was what had to be the MOST EXPENSIVE three delegates in history.
Bush is not unlike a lot of politicians. He hears of a new program and wants to be in on the ground floor, with acceptance and implementation.
Doesn’t matter if it really helps or not. He can point to it and say, “Look what I did! I’m the best friend educators and children ever had.”
Doesn’t matter if he’s wrong. By the time folks find out, he’s off to the next higher office.
Luckily, his plans were thwarted. The nation lucked out.
exerpt from wiki: “In 2004, the Lansing State Journal described DeVos as “a political pit bull for most of [Gov. Jennifer] Granholm's 16 months in office, and said that if DeVos wasn't Granholm's “worst nightmare,” she was “certainly her most persistent.”
She’s a RINO: has pushed Common Core, pandered to Muslims by pushing pro-Muslim, anti-Israel cirricula in MI schools and she was against ending affirmative action in that state.
I’m saying “NO” to her nomination.
Her brother is Erik Prince of Blackwater fame. Family very wealthy and her married family even wealthier - Amway. Go Betsy.
Well said - Education is not the purview of the Feds. Local and state bureaucracies have been kowtowing to the Feds for a long time and that must stop. Johnnie still can’t read anything worth reading and that’s just what TPTB want: dumbasses to be led around like sheep.
Amway is garbage thanks to DeVos.
Thanks for posting this.
Education is best done by the states and private business.
Her main job would be to redo the college funding system.
Except for collection of loans, the US government needs to get out of the student loan business.
For funding future semesters, the IRS might be permitted to collect and remit funds on federally outlined student/college financial agreements, but no more than say 1%/.2% of annual W-2/Schedule C/net 1099 income (for up to no more than 15 years) for any semester/monthly period of college attendance.
Colleges can borrow from banks based on their real estate.
Graduates would pay a percentage of their earnings to the IRS and the college would use the money from its graduates to repay the bank.
thanks for saving me the trouble of making the point!
Here is the old communist model-School Choice

Jeb Bush is THRILLED!
“Johnnie still cant read anything worth reading and thats just what TPTB want: dumbasses to be led around like sheep.”........
Common core.......Teach them just enough to get by, get lots of government handouts and vote demodummie the rest of their lives.
I’m not sure what Common Core was supposed to be or started out as, but apparently its current incarnation is a mess.
I’m not opposed to some kind of standard ability expectation by age/grade for students. It doesn’t need to get too far down in the weeds, however.
