The countrys largest police union, which endorsed Donald Trump for president, is wary of his stance on a key campaign issue: his promise to withhold funds from so-called sanctuary cities.
As part of his first 100-days action plan, Mr. Trump has pledged to block all federal funding to jurisdictions that shield illegal immigrants.
But in recent days, mayors and police chiefs in major cities across the country have pledged to stand behind their sanctuary city policies in defiance of Mr. Trumps plans.
The stance creates a conundrum for the National Fraternal Order of Police which doesnt support the sanctuary city concept but also worries that public safety could be harmed if funds for law enforcement initiatives are withheld from cities.
We do not support the withholding of public safety funds as a hammer, said FOP Executive Director James Pasco. The FOP, which has more than 330,000 members, has been very supportive of the Republican president-elect, and hopes that Mr. Trumps election will usher in a new era of respect and support for law enforcement. But Mr. Pasco said that withholding federal funds to local governments and their law enforcement agencies ultimately would endanger residents.
You cant hold peoples safety over their heads to get them to come to your point of view, Mr. Pasco said. To compel cities to re-evaluate their sanctuary status, some other levers are going to have to be pulled, the police union leader said.
Its not entirely clear which jurisdictions could be at risk for losing federal funds under Mr. Trumps plan, as there is no legal definition for sanctuary city. The term generally refers to jurisdictions that do not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, for example, by not notifying immigration officials when an undocumented immigrant is going to be released from custody.

Arrest the mayors and police chiefs instead
Oh dear; loss of funding may affect their pay raises. Couldn’t have that now, could we?
Easy solution. Fund police, fire and other emergency.
The FOP could notify the mayor and police chief that an epidemic of “Blue Flu” is spreading....
This is a load of BS. Go Trump Go!
It’s the mayors of libtard cities that say they won’t change their sanctuary cities, like Seattle near where I live.
He should just withhold the funding until they give up.
Kill all federal funding to cities and states.
It’s easy to keep your funding. Enforce the law.
Selectively cut off funds for liberal programs and not for public safety...
Then obey the law and stop doing it. The feds have jurisdiction on border policy and immigration.
Great!! Trump is saving money and he's not even president yet.
If these mayors have to choose between their maids and millions in pork, its “Adios abuelita!”
“... to get them to come to your point of view.”
It’s not a “point of view” numbnuts! It’s the law!
It means laying off union members.
We do not support the withholding of public safety funds as a hammer,
Well, I’m sure the citizenry would appreciate not having to worry about getting hit with a hammer by an illegal immigrant.
Sounds like the head of the union is used to sanctuary city status and whatever funding it affords. The union members do not have a voice here, though the headline pretends that’s who’s talking. It’s just the heads of the police. The people personally profiting
Rooting out corruption i imagine it’s like, when we lived on base getting rid of bugs was not going to happen until the housing guys came through with a renovation
Get on board, cops. It’ll be to your benefit.
“Its easy to keep your funding. Enforce the law.”
It would be simple. My guess is there’s a lot more money involved for some
Not so easy. As with when such liberal places have a normal budget crunch, they will simply divert funds from such essential services to fund their ‘super important’ cultural and other BS initiatives, like bicycle paths and alter-gender bathrooms and liberal safe spaces, instead.
