Democratic media mogul Bob Johnson told CNBC on Monday that fellow African-Americans should give Donald Trump "the benefit of the doubt," and hope common ground can be reached with the incoming Republican administration about issues facing the black community.
The BET founder who met with Trump on Sunday at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey described the sit-down as a "great chat" about "business solutions to social problems."
During the campaign, Trump made the case to African-American voters that Democrats let them down, and argued repeatedly "what do you have to lose" by voting for him.
Johnson, who had supported Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, said he told Trump over the weekend, "The real question you should be asking is what do African-Americans have to gain from your presidency."
"Trump is a business guy, and I think he's going to tilt towards finding [a] way to use fiscal policy to move the economy forward," he said. "Let's give him a shot. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt; see if we can find common ground."
"That's what's best for African-Americans," Johnson added.
To make his case, Johnson, founder and chairman of The RLJ Cos., quoted founding Congressional Black Caucus member Rep. Bill Clay Sr., a Missouri Democrat who served more than three decades in the House.
Paraphrasing Clay, Johnson said, "Black Americans should have no permanent friends, and no permanent enemies, just permanent interests."
"That's where African-American voters should be," Johnson contended, saying he does not view Trump and the Republicans as enemies or friends. African-Americans have "permanent interests," he said.
Johnson said the country needs a leader, "not somebody who's going to sort of choose sides," and he hopes Trump fits the bill.

It’s dawning on more and more people of demographics that lefties have targeted for grievance mongering, that this might not be the road to heaven after all.
Everybody has a burden to bear. To some this burden seems unfair. But God promises that a burden borne unto His Son will be rewarded, that it’s never in vain.
^^THIS^^ is the "real" question, Mr. Johnson. Until you and those of your ilk understand that, you will remain a slave to and perpetrator of destructive identity politics.
Anybody seen the FOX Objectified program with the Howard Levin interview of President Elect Donald Trump?
It’s great. Shows a warm, down-to-earth, reasonable, intelligent and driven individual.
At this point, being willing to put a hold to the grievance-based opposition could be all that the Trump situation requires to be able to prove out a way of blessing.
Trump has a very contagious optimism. I don’t watch TV much, but one time when I saw him on the air when a buddy of mine had it tuned in, his hope was clearly palpable. Just lemme at um, lemme at um, America will amaze you. It would have to take the worst cynic to not even give that a chance.
Levin sees the forest for the trees unlike many blacks who have difficulty recognizing real opportunity when presented to them. Some will follows Trumps lead while others will continue their lift as “Gibsmedats” and free loaders. I pray that the majority eventually see the light as Trumps makes their life more stable,
His question is reasonable — will the new Trump GOP remember not to leave them behind, like the Democrats have? The Democrats have encouraged them to never be happy with what they can get now, because they were so dissed in an earlier era of American history.
Well, that’s a formula that doesn’t work under God’s heaven. Rather, God wants to bless YOU, if you are willing to be grateful for it. God will take care of your grouchy neighbor in due time, if he will never consent to see the light.
What if I started a channel called WET?
I think Trump will also show them the virtue of a life where it is the right thing to stop and smell the roses.
The gibsmedats have skipped a step. They want to receive things as unto people, or as unto their racial identity, and that is going to be a recipe for a perpetual discontented, dark grouchiness. If they will receive things as unto God, then they may find themselves amazed at how bright their lives get.
This is one thing that lefties can’t understand and keep trying to deny and drumming in lies about — white people who are happiest don’t get into racial identity, and neither do people of any other color. They have been transcended past that as “children of God.”
I have jokingly proposed “redneck” (rednecks come in many colors: yellow, red, tan, white, and black) as a universal identity — because it’s an attitude. As the comedian Foxworthy put it, a glorious lack of sophistication. He had a great point and probably didn’t even know it: sophistication will kill a soul.
RET! Redneck Entertainment Television
I'm not sure you want to do that, if you want it to remain family-friendly for long.
Never mind trouble from the race-baiters... I'd guess the "adult" scene will take notice too.
In fact I'm surprised nobody's done that yet...
Reading this crap every day brings a smile to my face. Best election ever. Keep it up lib media! You’re killing yourselves and don’t even know it.
I am so sick of this crap! What is best for __________ (fill in the blank)! NO!! What is best for America and ALL Americans you fool. We have to stop this hyphenating of America! We are ALL Americans. Those that are here legally I mean.
Let’s see how much media coverage that gets!
And that's how he became a multi-billionaire. Not nearly enough accepted Hillary's caricature of a dim-witted, misogynistic, insensitive, crude, unstable, dishonest Neanderthal who somehow blundered into $10 billion.
That played a huge part in winning people over to him.
Bit late for that, Bob. Election's over.
And the fox sleeps with the chickens too.
Yeah, WET, sounds a bit “pornish.”
