Donald Trump has just reportedly agreed to settle several lawsuits over his Trump University real estate seminars.
Reuters is reporting Trump settled up just as the judge in the case was supposed to rule on a request by Trump's lawyer to delay the trial until after Trump's inauguration in January.
The judge, Gonzalo Curiel, is the man Trump said was too biased to hear the case because he has Mexican heritage.
depends on how it’s worded, the amount settled upon may be the only thing they can say.
To his credit, the judge in this made it clear that he really didn’t want it to go to trial, and he put a lot of pressure on the parties to settle it out of court.
Also, if he testified, his testimony would been nit picked for possible perjury and he could have found himself indicted on bogus charges, just like Scooter Libby. Good move to cut the bad guys off at the pass.
So $25 million / 6000 students is $4000 / student. And assuming lawyers take at least half, that’s $2,000/student. Wasn’t the total curriculum something like $31,000?
Trump could easily have spend $25 million on lawers defending against this.
That’s $25,000,000 too much because it empowers the scumbags on the other end.
But that is Trump’s way sometimes. Pay them now or pay for litigation.
Note that the scumbag attorneys bringing suit have stated that they represent a class of more than 30,000. In reality, it is only a handful because most people get a postcard size notification in the mail announcing a class action and they toss it in the trash which means they are entered in the class because they must send a letter opting out. Most people are entered by default.
But still more than 30,000 will receive a settlement check. After lawyers and NY AG fines (if included), the class of 30,000+ might receive about $150 each at most because attorneys will claim about 30% of the settlement and the AG’s office may tack on millions in fines.
Good get past it so the press can’t use it.
Yes, despite all the appointments today, it’ll be THIS leading the news.
Oh those slims will still use it, but you’re right —it’s good for him to get it out of the way.
Trump change.
Paying your accusers money is not a good way to go about claiming innocence.
$4,166 per person. I hope that they voted for him, because that seemed to increase the likeliness he would pay out.
Under ordinary circumstances he should have, and very probably *would* have, fought it.But at least for the next 4 years nothing about DJT's life will be "ordinary".
Trump appeared in ads saying he personally selected each instructor, and guaranteed they were highly qualified.
However, when opposing attorneys asked him questions about these instructors on the witness stand, it seems like he didn’t know any of them or recognize their names. Something like this could definitely wreck a guy’s case.
Yes we don’t need to hear a drumbeat about this minutiae the whole first 100 days of the Trump presidency.
Didn’t the woman who started this thing drop out? I read that she had made a video praising the university. Did that happen?
I’ve heard that, and that would have looked really bad because the media would be covering every detail of it. It would hurt his approval and efforts to gain support with that out there. That said, Trump obviously thought he could win because he refused to settle. The only reason he did is because he got elected. It’s a good thing that he did because it allows him to focus on bigger issues and takes a bone away from the media.

There were something like a a couple dozen actual litigant’s. I wonder if this settles all suits, or just the New York one.
