The U.S. economy got several positive signs Thursday, as a raft of reports showed jobless claims were down, new home construction reached a nine-year high, manufacturing activity stayed on the plus side and inflation seemed to be returning to normal levels. Jobless Claims
The fewest Americans since 1973 filed for unemployment benefits last week, a sign that the U.S. labor market is getting tighter.
Jobless claims dropped by 19,000 to 235,000 in the week ended Nov. 12, which included the Veterans Day holiday, a Labor Department report showed Thursday in Washington. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey called for 257,000. Continuing claims fell below 2 million to a 16-year low.
The biggest drop in initial claims since June suggests employers are loath to fire workers as the economy continues its modest expansion and the number of experienced applicants available for hiring remains limited. Filings for unemployment benefits have stayed below 300,000 for 89 straight weeks the longest streak since 1970 and a level typical for a healthy labor market.
Estimates in a survey from Bloomberg ranged from 245,000 to 275,000. The prior week's reading was unrevised at 254,000. See what stocks are at or near buy points with a 2-week free trial to Leaderboard!
The four-week average of claims, a less-volatile measure than the weekly figure, declined to 253,500 from 260,000 in the prior week.
New Homebuilding Hits A High
Meanwhile, U.S. new-home construction jumped to a nine-year high in October as an outsized advance in the number of apartment projects accompanied a strong pickup for single-family housing.
Residential starts surged 25.5%...

can we stop with these phony job figures that are a hoax .
this is a pure pr lie issued by the radicals running the show.
The only ones believing these lies are the people telling them.
This is Obama’s fake legacy; his real legacy is Ferguson/Baltimore/Dallas, crowned by the election of Donald Trump.
I’m not going to be as cynical as everyone else. Trump’s message of Nationalism and confidence might have already been taking hold.
What is the pro-Democrat purpose of this “information”? Are we supposed to conclude that we should have elected Hillary because the Obama economy is doing just great after all?
The minute Trump takes office the media will start posting the real jobless numbers, the real number of people on public assistance and the true deplorable state of the economy the next four years to discredit him. The MSM hasn’t learned a damn thing and will continue to think the American public is still stupid enough to follow whatever narrative they set.
“This is Obamas fake legacy; his real legacy is Ferguson/Baltimore/Dallas, crowned by the election of Donald Trump.”
Don’t forget the 22 successful Islamic terrorist attacks in the US that resulted in the deaths of 106 Americans.
Last month, we lost 103,000 full time jobs, and gained 90,000 part time jobs. The number of multiple job holders dropped by 87,000. More part time workers and fewer multiple job holders is probably why the unemployment rate dropped.
I don't have any numbers, but these are people who are tired of being told how great the economy is and likely voted for Trump.
What a load of bs. IBD continues to give democrats bs creds. Inflation numbers are phony just as the unemployment numbers are.
This article will allow democrats to say Trump hgot a recovering nation at his beginning.
“What is the pro-Democrat purpose of this information?”
They are quietly working on the Electoral College voters.
Point. Also see post 10.
That sounds like people working fewer hours and making less money.
My own income as a security guard has actually increased in the gross this year but the license fee takebacks of the state government eat up the increase pretty neatly.
What we got is that guys like you and me working for a living have been busy, and when our homebuilders and factory workers do well (like they just have) then I say it's a good thing. Sure, we can say it's all Trump's doing but imho the American worker has something to do with this. Regardless, reality is never all bad.
Another side of reality tho is that many folks prefer misery no matter what. This is true of both Dems and Reps, the only difference is who gets the blame. O still blames Bush and it looks like a lot of freepers--
--will continue to blame O indefinitely.
I think that's an entirely inappropriate comment, given that Obama is still the President.
The heavy duty (class 8) truck factory where I just retired from layed off 400 3 weeks ago because of declining sales. Sales are still falling, looks like another layoff at Christmas.
Those in the know watch class 8 sales because it’s usually 3 to 6 months ahead of the economy. On the plus side class 8 stocks are up.
“Jobless claims dropped by 19,000 to 235,000 in the week ended Nov. 12,......”.....
This entire report is bogus. The “gubmint” has been manipulating numbers for the past 8 years. You want to talk about inflation dropping, go to your local “Wally World”, or wherever you choose to shop, and you will see that “inflation” is alive, well and growing daily.

Maybe there'll be a day when a lot of freepers are happy w/ the economy. Pse ping me if you see it happen.
If you are a resident of Panama, in what way are you experiencing happiness or unhappiness with the economy of our country?
